Without Sabine Weyermann the world of beer would have looked different today. Weyermann’s malt provides character and color in the glasses of beer enthusiasts. A Franconian success story that began with a Texas beer.

This has already changed quite a bit. In the mid-1990s, this was the hardest student job in the Franconian town of Bamberg. In the reminder of it once again draws in the back: dust, noise, malt bags to lug around, 50 or 100 pounds of Weyermann’s malt factory. At the time, a company with 20 people. Today, over 200 employees, and the bags with the germinated and roasted cereal grains only weigh 25 kg. You flit via conveyor belts to automated logistics center and there are many: 700 – 1000 per hour. “There is none broken the back”, says managing Director Sabine Weyermann (in the article image above).

Malt for the whole world. Weyermann tap around between the full pallets on a shipping label – the address is in Russia, the next match goes to Brazil. “We deliver in 135 countries,” says the 61-Year-old. She has no Problem to situate themselves in the world of malt manufacturers: “Our specialty malts are stuck in 60,000 Beers in the world, we are the market leader in our Segment.”

Your malt gives the beer color and character. But as Weyermann after a brewer’s degree in the management of the family business came in 1985, she moved to her recently deceased father – was not the demand but not so. It was the time of the Pilswelle and nothing pointed to a success story for you: “I would not say that we were Broke, but everyone just wanted to drink light beer and for that you need only one type of malt.” The Bamberg Maltster aligned but were to small quantities of special Roasts. There was still a market?

In the visitor center of the Weyermann’s company you can also buy Beers with Bamberg malt.

A life full of malt

Of course, but you only found by accident. Sabine Weyermann want to tell the story over at the new visitor center. So get out from the hustle and bustle of the warehouse. The factory site is located in the vicinity of the station. The oldest buildings are about 100 years old, made of brick, with battlements and turrets, a playful green currently, Ensemble.

It is part of Bamberg, like the smell that emanates from the Rösttrommeln there. Today, a fragrance that is reminiscent of raisins wafting over the city. “I was born into this world, I love malt,” says the managing Director on the short path to the modern low-rise building.

Without malt beer – a world market leader in Bamberg

The inside is all yellow and brown decorated – the colors of the company. Malt samples around here, a Whiskey distillery, there is malt, candy, and long shelves with beer bottles. She has a relaxed and very concentrated manner to talk with one. You had the habit in the USA, where the current Weyermann-success story began.

With a kind of awakening experience. Weyermann and her husband, he is also a brewer, visited a young brewery in Fredericksburg, Texas. “Had these Stout-Porter-history,” she recalls – dark Beers, you don’t know at all. “My mouth can’t swallow, as much of the flavor was in the beer!”, she recalls the Moment 25 years ago. “My husband said, that’s okay, I’ll drink it for you. But think about it for just, if there are a lot of Breweries, the so-dark Beers do, this could be our market!”

Culture shock for the Bamberg Maltster

The two were on the lively Craft Beer scene is encountered. The had pushed Jimmy Carter in the late 70s, and he has enabled anyone to brew his own beer. The Weyer’s Packed in Bamberg your pattern suitcase full, then they flew back to the USA on a brewers fair. You in the business suit and he in a dark suit.

In Bamberg you can learn a lot about malt for beer production. The Craft-Beer scene also has its own magazine.

“Since we met a creative brewers municipality, with tattoos, Ponytails and backpacks is Quite different than the Bavarian brewers.” Malting-Boss raves still from the loose dealing of people with each other, the enthusiasm with which the U.S. small brewers on the dark malt from Franconia have responded.

Meanwhile, the curiosity is transmitted to other Beers and has turned the brewery scenery. The demand for the special malts from Bamberg is increased further. “And then, if a beer red, amber colors, amber colors, chocolate brown, tastes like Espresso, then we are here.”

Beers for Gourmets

Sabine Weyermann go to the beer shelf and takes a long-neck bottle down. “We have a totally weird Beers: This is Stout a Imperial, brewed with honey and aged with an oak barrel.” Price: 28 Euros. As you swallow, before the bottle is.

The master brewer is familiar with this reaction. “That’s for sure Wegzischen no drink for easy. More Enjoy to the conscious, to Talk about it,” she says, like a good wine. She even swears on a Coconut Porter from Hawaii. “It has hints of Espresso and a subtle finish of coconut at the Swallow.”
