What Iran calls for the EU?

It sounds like an Ultimatum: Within two months, the EU is supposed to liberate Iran from its economic Isolation. Otherwise, the country intends to suspend the nuclear deal in part. However, it is not only about trade.

Iran not only exports oil, but also steel

For Donald Trump, it’s quite simple: anyone Who does trade with Iran, will be punished by the United States. A year ago, the US President has terminated the years, negotiated nuclear deal with Iran unilaterally. At the same time, the United States has not imposed imposed unilateral economic sanctions against Iran – which only apply to American companies, but for companies worldwide. A year later, the government in Washington revoked the exemptions in connection with the civilian nuclear program of Iran. These exceptions it allowed Iran to date, to shipping excess low-enriched uranium to Russia and to bring the heavy water in Oman.

This maximum pressure Washington Iran had shown a minimal response, says Amir Alizadeh. The former Deputy managing Director of the German-Iranian chamber of industry and Commerce is currently editor-in-chief of the journal “Iran Contact”. Alizadeh says the DW: “Iran has informed the other party that he is no longer able to comply with some agreements of the 2015 closed nuclear agreement. There is no Ultimatum. Because within 60 days of Iran will have more low-enriched uranium and heavy water, as to him were in the atom agreement, because no one is allowed to buy the Surplus.”

The Dilemma of Iran

Iran must either give up its nuclear program for civilian use – totally or – like Iran’s President Hasan Rouhani has communicated – in the future, excess enriched uranium to keep for yourself, and its obligations in part, to expose. Rouhani called on the remaining Treaty partners, in addition to open Iran within two months of ways to circumvent the financial and Ölsanktionen against Iran. This should not happen, I will reconsider Iran limiting uranium enrichment to a level of 3.5 percent, and uranium may still be higher enrich – which would open the way to military use.

The EU is doing everything it can to on the nuclear deal with Iran to hold on, stressed the EU foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, on the sidelines of the meeting of EU foreign Ministers in Brussels on the 13. May. No one wants the Iranian leadership to come into the possession of a nuclear bomb. “The purpose of this agreement, and the agreement has not yet been achieved”, stressed the German foreign Minister, Heiko Maas.

Germany, France and the UK are now trying, under high pressure, to make the end of January purpose company founded INSTEX able to work. INSTEX stands for “Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges”, English: “an Instrument for the support of the Trade”. This Instrument is designed to allow trading with Iran due to payment outside of conventional financial channels by barter trade and the U.S.-sanctions deal.

A Kind Of Exchange

“If INSTEX actually works, would be used by the company for trading with goods such as medicines, medical products, food and agricultural products. More importantly, the long-term effect is for Iran itself,” says Amir Alizadeh and continues: “in the long term, the payment vehicle should be open to economic operators from third countries.” Such third countries, such as Turkey, India, or Iraq, are the main economic partners of Iran.

The most important sector of the Iranian economy, the oil and natural gas production. But the country also has a textile, cement, steel and building material industry and exported copper, iron, steel, and aluminum in several countries, including India and China. However, the United States imposed at the beginning of may for more sanctions against Iran, which should meet mainly the metal industry of the country and the second largest source of income in the country.

INSTEX is only “a bad joke”?

Not everyone shares the hopes of INSTEX as an effective weapon against the U.S. sanctions. “From an Iranian point of view INSTEX is a bad joke.” is Navid Jamshidi in an interview with DW. The business journalist from Tehran, explained: “The EU talks for months of a kind of ‘exchange’, by means of which the deliveries of Iranian and European exporters to each other can be offset. So Iran to deliver Oil, then the EU decides how much is this delivery of value and which products do you want to give Iran what price. You can’t but realise this, because the European export join in your fear of US sanctions.”

Rather, it is know to be of the opinion that Iran, with its requirement to buy more time: “The Iranian leadership, that Europe will not be able to bypass the US sanctions. But the EU is the most important Partner of the United States and may make in the course of negotiations between the United States and Iran to be strong.”
