As a Saxophonist, the 1965-born Peter Materna is in the German Jazz-scene. Since 2010, he is the musical Director of the Jazzfest Bonn. With its high-profile programme, the Festival has established itself as a fixture in the cultural life of the city established. 17. up to the 31. May, 2019 presented to the Jazzfest Bonn 25 concerts with national and international artists. For the first time, there will also be an Open-Air Event in the city of Bonn.

DW: Mr Materna, how you came up with the idea, of all things, in Bonn, known as the Beethoven city, to raise a Jazzfest from the baptism?

Peter Materna: I had by my side never to hold a Festival. The idea in 2002, after an encounter with the new culture of the city of Bonn head of Department emerged. He knew me as a musician, and as we have talked about the cultural scene in Bonn, he asked me, what I could imagine in addition to the focus on classical music in the city. Of course, the idea was there very quickly.

Jazz in addition to Pop, Rock, and even hit more of a stepchild of the music industry. What is it in your opinion?

There was a time, in the 30s, 40s of the last century, Jazz was very popular. And as the Pop and beat music came from England, the Jazz. Pop music has started to dominate the market.

Run on the cards – also in 2019, the Festival was sold out quickly

It was not there a risk to open up, of all things, a jazz festival?

All the signs at that time were very negative, also because we had the financial crisis, and there was no money at all in the culture. It was everywhere the painted. And I had the feeling that it is anyway only with private supporters, as I have made 2008 the first course for the implementation of the concept. The answer to your question is: Yes, it was totally insane, but I’ve done it.

That is, you are either a hopeless Optimist or your heart beats especially for the Jazz…

So for Jazz, it fails, and optimistic I am because of what we do in Jazz, implies optimism. That is, if we are to deal with the questions that preoccupy us in daily life, then the skills we need to live as a musician on a daily basis, exactly the required in the company. That is, if one is not strong Optimist, you have actually lost, per se.

The Norwegian musician Rebekka Bakken was the first jazz festival in 2010 and came back

What attracts you particularly to the jazz music?

The Jazz has very many qualities, which I can’t find in other music, and especially in today’s time, the whole Crazy in the world, reflected very well. The Jazz demands much from the players, and he demands much of the audience. That is, you have to go in depth and make an effort. We may, however, also just enjoy the shut-eye and head to the cinema in a world of wandering, as we know them from books. If you are reading a captivating book, then you are suddenly in a different world. These qualities are also in Jazz, because the developments are often surprising. You can find in many art forms. I will say this, the Jazz, the torch-bearer is par excellence, and I am very glad that he is discovered because of this quality in last time, and his appreciation is on the rise.

You put strongly to double-concerts. As young musicians play on a night with Jazz greats.

The idea is actually to combine the Unknown with the Famous and the Unknown, but should be high at least on the same Level. It is not easy to find, but easier and easier because we have a brilliant young talent scene. I have around 10,000 applications each year, from which I can really draw on unlimited resources and very many of them are at the highest Level is impressive. And this is also something that strengthens me, this concept is consistently pursued, because the moments of Surprise are just the unknown artists, the most beautiful.

Those who go to the Jazzfest Bonn?

We have made in between times surveys and found that very many viewers, part of the 50 per cent, were for the first Time in a jazz concert. And in another question, we have found that about half of the audience has only heard classical music before. We strive to give the people a new quality to this music.

The Jazzfest Bonn grows and grows. The concerts are sold out every year. Don’t you want to expand a little?

Where? That is the question. The Jazz works in certain areas with a very high sound and atmospheric quality. To move over 1000 visitors in a Jazz concert, without further notice. But the quality suffers when you do that. Then many do not see more of what is happening on the stage. Therefore, spaces such as the Beethoven house are, for example, is especially great, because you’re sitting to the artist around, a fantastic sound quality and everything looks. This is a magical atmosphere.

What has changed for you as a festival organizer? It is now easier for international Stars?

It is, in fact, that it is very easily communicate with the managers of the Stars. You have to take us seriously. At the beginning it was different: If they are willing to as a a completely new Festival on the scene, you get often, not even a reply. In the meantime you can contact us.

The French drummer Manu Katché is in international demand

The city of Bonn is embellished with the Label Jazzfest Bonn. But also through financial contributions?

It is so, that we have to fight in the Jazz area, in principle, very important that we get out of the publicly funded programs and funding pots a bit of money. We Finance just ten per cent of the total turnover from public funds, which is very, very little, if you look at classical music Festivals for comparison. The more glad am I that I have private sponsors.

If you look at the last ten years: What concerts have now time to return your heart beat?

There were many, many unique moments, and it really was worth all the effort especially because I can this moment to share with others. If I sit in audience with 500 other people and then concerts happen like with Django Bates, for example, with his Trio, which was phenomenal. Or Simone Zanchini, accordion virtuoso, the man knows, of the 500 people at the time, pulled into the spell with a Solo that was really quite touching. And then, of course, an incredible concert with Brad Mehldau and his Trio at the Opera: unforgettable moments, but there were very, very many…

Django Bates and his Band received at the jazz festival, a Standing ovation

Started the jazz festival with a three-day series of events, now has announced even Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier. This is a kind of accolade for the Festival?

I was very happy with the insane, as the request came to make the anniversary a reception and a concert in the Villa Hammerschmidt. I was really touched, me, this appreciation of our work is happy. This also shows that Jazz has won in the company of weight in the last few years.
