“The Robinson of our dreams is other than the Daniel Defoe,” wrote the literary critic Ulrich Greiner, 40 years ago. He’s right. Nothing has changed until today, hardly anything. The novel “Robinson Crusoe”, written around 300 years ago by the then nearly 60-year-old English journalist and writer Daniel Defoe, is the one. What connect most of the people today with “Robinson Crusoe”, is something else.
Faithful to the work Robinson-Crusoe-Translation back to the origin
The just-in Germany published new translation of Rudolf Mast, the first full since 1973, makes more than clear. For Translations in other languages similar is likely to apply. Defoe’s novel is today a world-famous, but read by hardly anyone – at least not the “right” novel is likely to have him. Know what the vast majority of children and young people, but also the adults of today, are Reader’s Digest versions, Youth books, TV-series and movies that have been incorporated into the fabric.

What is the difference? In short, The Original said:-novel with a wide range of meticulously told, with an infinite number of Details provided with the story of a man who spends involuntarily for 28 years on a desert island, and to master his arduous everyday trying. The search for God and the right Faith play a significant role.
Of main and holds a rank of episodes to tell in front of the shipwreck and the time after the rescue of the protagonist. These two parts are far more than just a short prologue and epilogue, rather, they are a separate narrative strands.
Most of the later “Robinson”books, condensed the work of strong
The “Robinson”books, on the other hand, the silence is the fuel for children and young people treated, the shorter and ground-in Translations for adults, from the numerous film adaptations of all, condense the story to a few spectacular highlights: sail – shipwreck – living on the island – encounter with the companions of the Friday escape and happy ending.

Defoe published his novel in 1719, he quickly became the best seller. To read the Original today (or work as a faithful Translation), one encounters far more than a straightforward adventure story. It is a kind of Conversion Saga with educational. The Protagonist is released from his Puritan parents house and driving – against the will of the father, to the lake. After the shipwreck, and the first years on the island he finds God and a “fulfilled” life.
Universities and literature fell on “Robinson Crusoe”
The book has been written in the past 300 years. Whole libraries have been created to brought a lot of smart comments paper: “Robinson Crusoe is the embodiment of the enlightenment belief in Progress and the Puritan-bourgeois individualism, and understands master trust in God and Common Sense to any Situation, that is, pragmatic, utilitarian, and economically thinking, the nature enslaved to power and honestly-earned earthly well-being with a divine pleasure on the same level”, for example, the comment in a well-established literary history.

Exactly this equating of the island’s history and religious base makes the plant in its core. Without these philosophical thoughts Robinson Crusoe is not “” actually conceivable. And yet the Translations, literary condensations or variants (of other authors), as well as the later implementations of this core, away from hollowed-out the novel in the following centuries.
“In the 18th century. Century found Defoe’s novel, especially in Germany, imitators, and the the island of adventure glorified as a civilization, otherworldly Idyll,” writes Christiane Zschichert for example, in “books – Everything you need to read”.
The book influenced generations
Rolf Vollmann noted in “The novel Navigator: two hundred favorite novels,” 1779, from the German of Joachim Heinrich Campe-written book “Robinson the Younger. To the pleasant and useful entertainment for children”: “It was this book, ( … ) very soon everywhere in Europe and to read the boys’ was translated given far more often than the spread also not non-Original – entire generations were made in this way to men who are secretly on the Islands home, and there to God and their own strength to build, with the love Friday…”

Why is the novel by Daniel Defoe, the breeding so meticulously with survival techniques in agriculture and forestry, veterinary and Agriculture employees, according to a God-pleasing life of addiction, however, are not forgotten? Why has kept this book over the centuries? And why nearly every kid knows it today, in digital times, at least from the title?
Robinson Crusoe: the immortal literary Hero
Günter Wessel attempts in the afterword to the new translation, some explanation: “Robinson escape is by living on his island, all the conflicts, the lives of each individual, and thus society, through: Him, the relationship of nature to culture, of solitude and society, of sacrifice and greed, of possession, and existence has also the longing for a World already.” Thus, Wessel, was “‘Robinson Crusoe,’ not only immortal, but profoundly contemporary and alive.”

Today, most people are the all American series like “Lost” (2004 – 2010) and a Hollywood movie like “Cast Away” (2001) with Tom Hanks, the typical “Robinson Aden,” tell, a lot closer. Inspire all of these film were writers and Directors but, by Daniel Defoe, an English writer, who delighted in 1719 the reader with a novel, the (albeit often in modified Form) still today, fascinated – 300 years after its release.
