An Instrument of the lander InSight has measured for the first time, a Mars quake. The US space Agency NASA has published a transcript of the recording. There are also other sources of noise.

6. April shook on Mars, so much so that the geophysicist from the U.S. space Agency NASA are confident that you have registered a real Mars quake. It would be the first proof that there is seismic activity on the Red planet.
Various sources of noise to be visible
The scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) gave their findings in the 23. April in Pasadena, California known. Thus, the “Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) had recorded” the data of the earthquake and the researchers on the earth back in a moment. In recording the vibrations caused by Mars are to be clearly marked-winds, the actual quakes as well as vibrations of the Lander itself with its arm.
SEIS was jointly developed by the French space Agency CNES, the Paris Geophysical Institute IPGP, ETH-Zurich, the Max-Planck-Institute for solar system research, Imperial College, London, the French engineering school ISAE and the JPL.
The Instrument was, therefore, since the landing of InSight 128 earth days in operation, before the first seismic event took place. InSight stands for “Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport”.
New field of research opened
The geophysicists are employed in order to explore the exact cause of the signal. Nevertheless, the experts expect the recording to confirm the seismic activity of Mars. “This event officially marks the beginning of a new research field: The earthquake is a client of the Mars!”, the researcher Bruce Banerdt said.
“We have been waiting for months on a Signal like this,” said Philippe Lognonne”, a seismologist of the IPGP. “It is so exciting to finally have proof that Mars is still seismically active.”

Further instruments for the measurement of heat flux and Rotation
In addition to the Seismometer SEIS, the 360-kilogram lander InSight is also equipped with an Instrument that deep into the Martian soil burrows.

New Mission to Mars, InSight digs deeper
The so-called “mole” HP3 was developed by the German centre for air and space travel, and by the Polish industry partners Astronika in Warsaw built.
At the beginning of March, the probe began its journey into the underground. First of all, the ground rocket pounded a half a Meter deep into the ground. The Instrument measures the heat flow in the Martian sediment.
In addition, Insight is equipped with cameras, and systems for the measurement of Mars rotation.
