Because nothing pulls at the Oscar nominations and tear as much as the film adaptation of a heart-breaking true story. Important Drama, Drama, Drama.

Because out of the whole mass of films which have qualified for participation in the Oscar race, it more often than the average dramas nominated for the Academy or the Oscar as “Best Picture”.

The graph shows: In for the Oscar-qualified films, approximately 19 percent are dramas. Among the winners as Best Film dramas are represented, however, more frequently, with around 38 percent. In the case of the comedies, it is Vice versa: the Oscar-Qualified many comedies are right; the Golden Statue wins, but rarely.

What is the Academy like

But what are the components of a Film need to find favor with the Academy? There are other features that increase the chances of getting a nomination as “Best Picture”:

If you are planning your movie and the real story that you found in the newspaper, for a film adaptation is not enough, you may not help – according to the Academy’s taste – a bit. A few examples: The against player in Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper”, the Biopic about the American sniper Chris Kyle, was cobbled by hand from a variety of figures together – and the Film as “Best Picture” nominated; in “12 Years a Slave” was shortened to the legal dispute over the origin of Solomon Northup from practicality – and the Film as the best Film of the year award.

Shortened, but true: the story of the movie “12 Years a Slave”

If you take the advice from this analysis and then actually at the Oscars ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, its Gold Statue take, thank you but please not only the Academy, but also to the industrious Users of the Online database TVTropes.org. This is a Wiki, so a hands-on database, in the non-commercial Users of motifs, patterns, and recurring elements in different media can enter, and not only in movies but also, for example, in video games or Mangas.

Because of their work, the DW was able to account for the motives and components – so-called Tropes – that have a statistically significant impact on an Oscar nomination in the category “Best Film”.

Movies with certain ingredients will have a higher probability to be of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as “Best picture” nominated films without them.

The Methodology

This is a result of the analysis of 2682 films that stood since the year 2000 for the Oscars to choose from, and which people in the Online database TVTropes.org cinematic motifs have associated with it. From this we can investigate the taste of the Oscar Academy for the last 20 years and presumed preferences can be derived.

On TVTropes.org it is stated in an ironic tone, how often people are happily married, allusions to other films of occurrence, or the Butler is the murderer. Users can collect not only examples of, and complement, but also have their own pages created. There are also amazing curious motifs: what time is Sushi on a human body is served, children are put in a Camp to Slim down or Buenos Aires as the capital of Brazil must serve.

The Academy, like the novel, film adaptations, and a bitter-sweet End

Under the Heading of “Honor Before Reason” are listed in tvtropes.org for example, scenes, like where honor and Pride count more than the mind – even that seems to be the Academy. At least it’s four times nominated more likely for a Film with this subject for an Oscar than for a strip without.

Similarly, a bittersweet film seems to be the end of an Oscar-nomination, beneficial – the probability of an Oscar nomination is almost three times higher than the other end.

If, for example, Frodo in the last part of “Lord of the rings”film adaptation by Director Peter Jackson leaves his friend Sam in middle-earth, to maintain the psychological wounds of his Ring-a burden in a symbolic Beyond, could have the Academy impressed.

Tragic: At the end of the movie Frodo and Sam can be alone back in middle-earth

The can keep the Oscar awards 2004 as “Best Picture” award-winning “the Lord of the rings”movie is already a good example for you, if you want to meet up with their production to the tastes of the Academy. Because he met as a novel adaptation (see also “The English Patient”, “Slumdog millionaire” or “Forrest Gump”) with stunning landscape shots (also in “out of Africa”, “Titanic” and “dances with wolves”) equal to two other nominations-oriented characteristics.

Drama and tragedy are good, a bit Kitsch and a pleasant feeling in the abdominal area are not allowed, however, missing. Because motives of such a happy wedding to increase the chances for a nomination as “Best Picture”.

The Odds-Alcoholic

And then there’s the alcohol. Among the eight candidates for the best Film, four films in which Users of tvtropes.org alcoholics discovered this year are: In “A Star is Born” with a few drinks, the setting music star Jackson Maine, played by Bradley Cooper, in his Ruin. Mahershala Ali is drinking as a talented Pianist in “the Green Book” like the one or other bottle of Cutty Sark. The Ku-Klux-Klan-member Ivanhoe is drunk in “BlacKkKlansman” and “Vice” have both the characters of Dick Cheney as well as President George W. Bush has an alcohol problem.

In “A Star is Born” has a Country-struggling singer Jackson Maine with his alcohol problem

And when listing the alcohol excesses are not even from “Bohemian Rhapsody” or Drinking out of loneliness and frustration of the Mexican family drama “Roma” listed – both films are also nominated for the Oscar as “Best Film”.

For nominating candidates, it is worthwhile, therefore, to be guided by these characteristics. If you turn now, a heartbreaking Drama based on a true story with a quota alcoholics in stunning landscape, you then have a guarantee to win an Oscar? No: There are, according to the analysis, there is no specific motifs that have statistically led to significantly more often from the nomination to the Oscar-winning. Alone in the nominations success characteristics can be identified.

Drama is not everything

If you wish to produce your Oscar-movie – because studies show that alone a nomination is worth at the box-office huge – be warned: It depends on the components of your movie, but not only.

Thus a Film as “Best Picture” is available for selection, it must be, among other things, in the previous year for at least seven consecutive days in Los Angeles County in the cinema run. Netflix, for example, “Roma” is a Drama about a Mexican upper-class family in the ‘ 70s, and her nanny, specifically for this purpose only briefly in the cinema.

Netflix-movie “Roma” came all the way to the Oscars to the movies

As the two American sociologists Gabriel Rossman and Oliver Schilke, 2014 in her Oscar-describe the study, is also the release date of a film is very important: An Oscar nomination is likely, the later the Film is released in the year. Because then he is in the Academy still present before in January, the nominations will be announced and the producers are courting indoor and producers until shortly before the award ceremony in L. A. to get the favor of the Academy-members – for as long as you can still vote. In the end, decides the Hollywood Reporter to be around 8200 persons estimated Academy – who sits therein, is kept secret – from the 17-Film-trades, the “Best Film” of the year.

“Roma”: the most Expensive advertising campaign for years

For a nomination is also the advertising budget of a film plays in addition to the content, but an important role. Netflix has started for Roma, the most expensive Oscar PR campaign for years, and, according to PR experts, ten to 20 million dollars spent, as the New York Times reported.

A lot of Drama and a great landscape shots can help, a thick Budget is for the Oscar race, but nevertheless essential.
