The fate of the year the Kristina Vogel

DW: How your Situation is now, a good half a year after your severe accident?

Kristina Vogel: I haven’t processed the consequences. There are still days where I wish that my state would be another. But it is what it is. I am now no longer on two legs but on two wheels on the road. I am now learning how life with a wheelchair works. Some things are and some of them are quite different.

What are the stages you have lived in the last few months?

I’m after the crash on the velodrome awake and could not move my legs. Since I suspected that I can no longer run. When I woke up from the coma and my legs no longer felt, it was clear to me I am a paraplegic. As a result, I was able to accept the Situation quickly and for me to process. A ‘Is there not yet a Chance?’, has given me.

What you need to learn now that you can no longer move as before?

The most Important thing was to work as quickly as possible, a good hull stability. That makes things a lot easier. But it is still so, that I need, when I need some Heavy lifting, holding on to the wheelchair. In the hospital, disabled everything, in everyday life is different. Therefore, it is my goal to can as soon as possible and a pot from the stove, without that I must hold myself.

It helps you return to everyday life, that you were an active Athlete?

I brought as a performance athlete is of course a lot of muscles. The attempts to activate I now. This is my therapy the most Important. It helps, but especially from the head, because I know how hard the path to success can be and that it pays, if you keep at it and struggling. I’m already an incredibly ambitious patient. And sometimes I annoy the Doctors, because a lot of things, quickly enough.

In addition to the sports career, she had driven her professional development at the Federal police. What’s next?

The Federal police has helped me very much. It leaves me time to look at what specific Job I can do with the disability. In addition, I also have other “Offices”: I’m in the DOSB [German Olympic sports Confederation – translator’s note. d. Red.] and a year ago at the world Cycling Union UCI in the athletes ‘ Commission was elected. There, I would like to introduce me to continue.

In the Sprint for years, the world’s top

They were recently honored Second in the poll for “Athlete of the year” and also as “cyclist 2018”. How hard was it to come back on a velodrome, they used to be so successful?

It was nice. I enjoyed it, to be back with the team-mates and to say Hello. That was something Special. We were fighting all these years, so often in competitions and training camps. You can say we were like a family. This Commonality, I miss currently the most.

You have tried in the clinic, some new sports, including archery. It excites you, in this discipline, perhaps a second, to start a Paralympic career?

The accident, the hospital gives me many opportunities for me to test. In addition to archery I bowling, or play Basketball. I have also sat in the canoe. It makes me all the fun, because it awakens the ambition. Not physically but I am still a long way to think of performance sports. The take three, four years. Then it must be a sports, for which I can burn as for the track Cycling. If I come back as an Athlete, I want to be successful again. Can’t lose I still.

You many sympathies flew to. People in Germany and abroad have taken your life’s destiny. How to explain, where the track Cycling but only a sport on the edge?

This wave of sympathy was amazing, cheers me up and gives me courage. I get a lot of fan mail to the hospital. This includes flowers, candy, or books from me, completely unknown people. This shows me, what is the value of the Sport, how it connects people, how many to me to have Peeps all over the world. Maybe I also get this sympathy, because I deal honestly with my current Situation, you assume. At the same time I also see it as a task. I want to show that you can overcome every low blow, if you’ll believe it.

Up to your serious accident, Kristina Vogel was one of the most successful track cyclist in the world. In 2012, the Kyrgyzstan-born German in London with Miriam Welte Olympic champion in the team sprint. In the case of the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, she won Gold in the Sprint and with Welte Bronze in the team sprint. In addition, bird has collected eleven world champion titles.
