Paul and Marietta Kamstra from the Netherlands stuck to your ship, “Avontuur” on the Or. The reason for the low water on the river on the German-Polish border.

By boat, the couple Kamstra has already toured the most remote corners on every continent. This year they wanted to explore more of Europe. But the extreme drought made a dash through the bill.

The floating home of the couple is 25 meters long and five meters wide. It is located behind the dike in the small port of Kienitz, in Brandenburg, Germany. Paul and Marietta Kamstra have set up to 120 square meters in a cozy home. Two comfortable leather armchairs in front of a fireplace, cozy bunks below Deck look inviting. Kitchen, shower room, study room – nothing missing.

Boredom on Board Marietta Kamstra has not – she makes hand-work in the work room

The already built in 1892, living ship “Avontuur” (Dutch for adventure) is a branch of the Or, in which ducks and gulls. “We have the most beautiful prison that I can think of,” says Kamstra with a grin. Beavers, river otters, and eagles they would have been watching. At night, it was up to a couple of stars so dark, as in civilization, he enthuses.

Without rain, the anchor must remain below

The river is treacherous, especially at low water. “We have currently an average depth of one Meter. However, the channel is changing due to the flow and eddy in the Or constantly”, says Sebastian Dosch from the competent waterways and shipping authority Eberswalde. A normal freight traffic on the border river is in sight, as long as in the catchment area of the Oder in Poland and the Czech Republic, heavy rainfall failed to materialize.

The two Dutchmen on their ship to make a relaxed impression: “We’re in no hurry, places already on our ship and enjoy the peace and quiet,” says the captain of the “Avontuur”.
