The USA is the goal of the refugee caravans that move through Mexico. But anyone who has interest to move the people to escape? To these questions many conspiracy theories revolve. What is not true?

Both in the USA as well as in Central America, a battle over the interpretation of the recent “caravans” of migrants that have now arrived in Mexico and further North. Some voices describe the mobilization of around 9,000 Hondurans, Salvadorans and Guatemalans as an “unnatural” phenomenon, the Alliance of autocratic rulers in Latin America, and more powerful groups in the Economy will be driven forward to US President Donald Trump damage in the run-up to the “Midterm elections”.

Both Nicaragua as well as Venezuela is accused of sponsoring the most recent caravans to the media attention of their countries to distract. Both the General public due to the systematic violation of human rights in the sights of the world. The Honduras government accused recently by the opposition party, LIBRE, to be a puppet of the Venezuelan heads of state, Nicolás Maduro, and have over three thousands of desperate countrymen to the Migration moves. Honduras and Guatemala have announced investigations, to punish the “supporters” of the migrants in caravans.

Migrants are exploited

“The peoples real does not provide for sanctions for those migrants assistance,” said Frank Wolff, Institute for migration research and intercultural studies (IMIS) in Osnabrück. “The States can punish players if they consider this aid as a war or criminal acts. International agreement committing all States to give their citizens the possibility to leave their territory. But while no state has the duty of migrants to the national territory, to withhold the pass through, has also, no country is the duty of migrants. This legal vacuum, the migrants in a vulnerable situation”, says migration expert.

The heads of government of Nicaragua and Venezuela, Daniel Ortega and Nicolas Maduro

The migrants, caravans were being exploited from all sides, says Wolff. They had formed spontaneously and grew, because the people feel on the dangerous road to the North in larger groups are safer. With this growth of the individual groups, the Social media had played a big role. “Besides, not all dream of these migrants, in the United States. The migrants ‘ trains that have set in motion, shrink and grow on a daily basis since every day hundreds of migrants join the group to leave,” adds Wolff.

Vote with your feet

“Mergers of this kind are manifestations of social processes that are not new”, is Günter Maihold, Deputy Director of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und politik (SWP) in Berlin. This time, the caravans would fall together, but with the for Trump the important “Midterm”elections, and the Takeover of the Mexican presidency by the progressive Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The heads of government in Venezuela and Nicaragua, Maduro and Ortega, like the caravan as a will see a welcome Affront to the White house, but from Maiholds point of view, none of the two has spurred on this caravan.

Migrants usually will try to cross the border in small groups and not as a caravan

“It doesn’t surprise me that so many Hondurans, Salvadorans, and Guatemalans leave their countries back. I would say that they have voted with their feet, because they have lost Faith in the possibilities for change at the ballot box,” says Günter Maihold and is one of the reasons that people in Central America are drifting in the Exodus: lack of jobs, education opportunities and public services, deterioration of the social fabric, poverty, and the high probability of victims of criminal gangs, political or gender-based violence.

Many dangers on the way to the North

“It doesn’t surprise me that there are many activists and NGOs, the migrants on their dangerous way through Central America and Mexico support, adds Maihold. Frank Wolff from the IMIS agrees: “The character of these caravans is decentralized, but they act as a Magnet for a lot of Central Americans, because they convey a sense of security. Women, young people and children benefit the most from the cohesion of the caravan”, the osnabrück-based researchers.

“The caravan will definitely not arrive as a single Monolith at the border to the United States, as Trump and his followers imagine,” says Wolff. They would split into smaller groups, and along the porous border line according to the options you are looking for to cross. Only in this way, the migrants would have a Chance in the USA to come, and they knew, too. “This is what you have done in the last five or six years,” says Günter Maihold. “The current caravans are unusually large, but they are not the First”.
