“W-w-w-why?” – Stutterer to repeat individual letters or syllables. The phone or shopping are a challenge. “It is important not to be ashamed of,” says therapist Dorothea Beckmann in the Interview.

Deutsche Welle: Ms. Beckmann, treat stutterers. How can you help them?

Dorothea Beckmann: a desensitization. That is to say, against the unpleasant feeling of stuttering harden, and stuttering. So you can treat stuttering.

What steps need to be a stutterer?

The Stuttering talks to him, the Beak has grown. If he feels that he needs to stutter on a certain word, he will apply a local elocution: He’s trying the word with a little pressure to start soft and quiet. It’s called a Pullout: I pull the word out of the Blockade! You have to practice quite a long time. Then there is the so-called Fluency Shaping. The Stuttering tries to change his entire Talk. He speaks slowly and with a soft voice, so that every word will be a bit longer.

Similar to the liquid of the flow of speech is also Singing. Why not stutters?

Singing always has a certain rhythm and also concrete. When you Sing, you keep the voice consistent in the vibration. When Speaking, however, we always make very short pauses between the words. When you Sing you do not have these breaks. As the words flow into each other. This end-to-end vibration of the vocal cords contributes to the fact that it stutters.

What happens when you stutter in the brain?

At the Moment, the stutters, the brain sends the wrong signals to the speech organs, the vocal cords or the tongue or the lips. By the false signals, the speech motor tangled for a short time or can be blocked. The person can then speak for a short Moment. The lips are tightly pressed to each other and not give the word “free”. There is a short Pause. It has a kind of spasm in the lips. The speech organs tense up for a short time.

There are imaging techniques, which can make the stuttering is visible?

By means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was able to find that in the Moment of stuttering to other areas of the brain are active than in the case of liquid-speaking people. In the Moment of stuttering half of the activities are not in the MRI in the right brain visible, the hearing actually went there. Our language centers are in the left half of the brain.

Are there any famous people who stutter. Bruce Willis for example. But I don’t show it to him?

As an actor, I have to adjust myself a bit. That’s it for Stuttering often rather easily. They come in a better flow, if you speak as yourself. There are a number of stuttering actor, for example, Marilyn Monroe and Rowan Atkinson, speaking, however, in his roles almost never. But he stutters.

In what age of the stuttering begins?

Stuttering to come to speak, as a stutterer with the world, with the predisposition that you will stutter. It is genetically determined. Often more Stuttering in the family of people who stutter. There is a genetic component, so on the one hand, but also an organic component, which is anchored in the brain. Also psychogenic factors or psychological triggers that reinforce the Whole yet to come.

What advice can you give to those Affected?

It is not really important to talk to be ashamed of, to hide the stutter, it’s not taboo to authorize. You should reach out to people and say “Hey, I stutter, but it doesn’t bother me, and you should represent.” This is similar to how if I say: “I am short-sighted and I need glasses.” This is nothing to be ashamed of. It is important to harden them and to say: “Well, and? Makes but nothing. I begin to stutter stop. You have red hair, and you squint, and I stammer. Basta.”

Dorothea Beckmann is a speech therapist in Münster and self-Stotterin.
