The Hungarian government abolished the programme in gender studies at universities. What seems absurd, is part of an ideological Offensive and a reactionary policy on the family.

Not all of them are with Hungary’s new education policy

Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén had already announced in mid-August in an Interview indirectly: the end of gender research as a discipline in Hungarian universities. Nobody wanted to deal with “Genderologen”, so you don’t need to train, so Semjén at the time, the concept of “social gender” is a “nonentity”.

Now, the subject gender studies, it was abolished actually official: last Saturday, one of Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stepped in, signed the government regulation in force, with the help of the specialist in Gender Studies from the list of master’s courses has been deleted. Only already begun, courses may be brought to an end – then the teaching is prohibited at Hungarian universities virtually.

Currently gender research as a master’s degree is offered at two Hungarian universities: the state-funded Budapest Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), the oldest Hungarian University, as well as at the Central European University (CEU), funded by the Open Society Foundation of Hungarian-American stock exchange billionaire George Soros. At both universities, around 20 students have occupied the master’s course.

Also, the Central European University in Budapest, and is affected by the closure of the programme

The spell beam of reactionary family politics

A whole subject itself to non-state-funded universities to no longer accept, may seem absurd, but it is in Hungary, the expression of long-held ideological and cultural struggle, and a reactionary policy on the family. A large part of Hungary’s ruling Elite is convinced that in Western Europe the threatening downfall of the Christian West, because that is where values such as family, home and Nation, would no longer be held high. In the West, it formulated Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister Semjén, had a left-liberal, Masonic, Islamic migrants and “sexual deviants abolished” any “normality”, Hungary resisted the opportunity to “Hungarian life”. According to this logic, the subject gender studies is part of the civilizational decay that is threatening in Europe, and the Hungarians in their own country and stop trying.

At the Eötvös-Loránd-University, the master’s degree in Gender Studies had been introduced only last autumn, even then, to the great indignation of the Hungarian government. Bence Rétvári, the Secretary of state in the Ministry of human resources (EMMI), for social Affairs, education, culture, family, sports and youth responsible, had said in this connection, the content of the subject contrary to the “world government” are diametrically opposed. His Ministry was therefore introduced at the state Corvinus University of Budapest master’s degree in “family studies” – as a counter-weight to the Gender Studies.

For Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Semjen also “sexual deviants” (here at a Gay Pride Parade in Bucharest) are responsible for the “civilizational decline” in Europe.

In the broadest sense, it is also about demography and family policy. The Hungarian parliamentary President László Kövér, formally, the second man in the state, an old friend and Confidant of Viktor Orbán and the Orbán-Fidesz-one of the key ideologists had already proclaimed 2015, the Hungarians reject the “gender madness”. “We want our girls to consider it as the highest quality of your self-realization, if you give birth to us grandchildren”, Kövér said on a Fidesz Congress. Last year, the former Fidesz Vice-President, Szilárd Németh, the Hungarian women have to the Land of “bears,” in order to produce a “population growth”. Hungary’s Prime Minister Orbán wants to start in the coming weeks, a new national campaign, the demographic decline of Hungary to stop.

Part of a larger cultural struggle

The campaign against the gender research currently is only the most visible part of a cultural struggle of Hungarian government circles, has been running for a few months. It is directed against writers, artists and musicians with a government-critical positions, but also against moderate representatives from the environment of the government party, Fidesz, as the former Vice-state Secretary in the Hungarian foreign Ministry Gergely Pröhle. He was deposed recently as the head of Budapest’s Petofi literary Museum (PIM), because he had sued the government newspaper Magyar Idök, at the expense of Hungarian taxpayers, the literati had invited the Hungarians would be slander. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had defended the cultural-political Offensive of his government at the end of July in a keynote speech, and from the autumn of “great changes” in the Form of a spiritual-cultural turn against the “’68 Elite” announced.

It is not the first such cultural-political Offensive. Already in 2010/2011, a few months after the first Two-thirds election victory of Orbán, were dismissed dozens of well-known liberal intellectuals, and academics from state universities or are forced out. The campaign against them culminating in the “philosophers of process”, an investigation against prominent philosophers like Ágnes Heller for alleged embezzlement of research funds – allegations that had to take back the Orbán-government later.

In the meantime, are employed in Hungary at state universities, and cultural and political institutions practically the majority of employees publicly critical of the government positions. Now it is a matter, recently ruled by the left philosopher and former anti-Communist civil rights activist G. M. Tamás in a comment for the weekly newspaper hvg, not only left, but also to displace the moderately conservative Intellectuals from the Public – in Hungary the reactionary state leadership consider all who do not fit into the framework of their national Propaganda, as “Alien” and “fornication Driving,” says Tamás.
