As one of the fiercest critics of President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua, Silvio Báez is dangerous. However, even after a physical attack by the spiritual advertises more for the dialogue with the government.

The violence in Nicaragua has no end. Even after almost three months since the beginning of the most serious political crisis in the country since 40 years, the fights go on. Responsible for this is Daniel Ortega, Silvio Báez analyzed. The auxiliary Bishop of Managua in the 72-year-old former guerrilla fighter now, “a man, alone, for money and Power thirsty.”

“The people are helpless in the Interview in the face of this barbarism,” said Baez in the DW. The 60-year-old spiritual is especially true of critical representatives of the Catholic Church in his country. It was no coincidence that he’s on 9. July was attacked in the Basilica of Diriamba, South of the capital, Managua, from a violent Mob.

Baez came together with cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, and the Apostolic Nuncio in Managua, the Poland Waldemar summer day in Diriamba, in order to make a picture of the clashes between protesters, security forces and Pro-government thugs. Insults, kicks, punches and a stab wound to the forearm, of Baez were the result of the brutal attack on the bishops.

351 Dead and more than 2000 injured

“In Nicaragua, all of them are now vulnerable. We are all helpless,” complains Báez and refers to the current conflict, the the 18. April, with a Protest of students has begun and, according to independent human rights organisations so far, 351 people Dead and more than 2000 injured. In addition, hundreds of people are imprisoned or disappeared.

“This is a country that is in the hands of para-military forces and violent conflict groups, and in which there is no law and no reliable authority,” says Báez .

The Bishop has not experienced the first of the Daniel Ortega-led government in the 1980s directly. In 1979, at the age of 21 years, was Baez after the overthrow of the dictator Anastasio Somoza in the Carmelite order in Costa Rica. But exactly how many of his friends, he also celebrated the victory of the Revolution, which understood itself as a great humanist project. Later, however, Báez, who became President of the big idea and the power ambitions of the politicians to the victims.

Loyal to the government thugs attacked at the 9. July three bishops in the Basilica, including Silvio Báez.

For the Bishop, Daniel Ortega, is not the “heritage” of the 1979 Revolution and is not responsible for their continuity. “Daniel Ortega is a money-grubbing, power-hungry man who only knows the language of conspiracy, cynicism and, unfortunately, the violence”, says Báez. The current crisis in Nicaragua was also not the result of external interference or conflict “between the left and Right”, as the government claim.

Hope on the dialogue

The first student protest against the Reform of social insurance was, in the opinion of the spiritual, only the trigger for a crisis that “did not come overnight”. It was more like a pressure cooker that exploded due to a series of political and economic factors, all of a sudden.

“Here is the historical Tradition of the Erbherrschaft connects with electoral fraud, corruption, and a Messianic cult of the leader,” says the Bishop. Added to this is the million dollar financial injection from Venezuela, “came to the state to the benefit of, but directly into the pockets of the family of Ortega and its closest allies floss”.

To the prospects for the it had initiated in may, and currently to still come dialogue with the government Báez assured that the bishops do not want to give up on the talks. However, currently there is no end to the crisis was foreseeable. It could even lead to a civil war. However, the Catholic Church will do everything to avoid a war-like confrontation. “We hope for a peaceful solution. This is what is fighting the Church.”
