Russian theater Director Serebrennikov arrested

Since may, the authorities held his passport and an Opera production in Stuttgart was waiting in September, the Director of the Moscow Gogol theatre. Now, Kirill Serebrennikov has been arrested.

The 47-Year old fraud-accused, as the state investigative Committee in Moscow announced. According to the head of the Gogol is said to have embezzled theatre between 2011 and 2014 state funds in the amount of one Million euros. According to Serebrennikov, the investigators accuse him to have a state-funded Shakespeare-staging is not listed. He himself rejected the accusation of embezzlement. The performance was shown both in Russia and abroad.

Kirill Serebrennikov is an international theater star, with a critical attitude to the current policy. His Theater is known for a certain degree of artistic freedom and has long been a thorn in the side of the Russian authorities. So the theatre and also the apartment Serebrennikows was already occupied in may of 2017, searched, and three former employees with pre-trial detention or house arrest. Now the Director himself has been arrested.

Many Russian artists are calling for the release of Kirill Serebrennikov. The Staatsoper Stuttgart is currently the Director should stage in September, is actually the fairy-tale Opera “Hansel and Gretel”. In may, the Moscow Bolshoi theatre, had already caused a stir, as it had just before the world dropped world premiere of a ballet by the Director of the Russian star dancer Rudolf Nureyev.
