“We must all return to crafts”

The sculptor Gerhard Marcks (1889-1981) was one of the first teachers at the Bauhaus. Like no other, he took the original idea of a renewal of all the arts.

His Credo: “architects, sculptors, painters, we must all return to crafts!”, curator Anke Blümm reminds. “Thus, Marcks and his comrades-in-arms have dropped from a more technology – and industry-oriented Bauhaus, as it developed from 1923 onwards, Martin Gropius.”

Gerhard Marcks modeled, a plaster figure

Marcks and his students – for example, the ceramist Marguerite Friedlaender-Wildenhain (1896-1985), the silversmith Wolfgang ponds (1903-1978), or of the painter Johannes Driesch (1901-1930) – a traditional craft Ethos. The exhibition shows at the New Museum in Weimar: The more than 200 exhibits, including sculptures, drawings, paintings, and ceramics, are evidence of this artistic self-understanding. Marcks and his fellow artists have influenced each other. Not least, they were often each other’s portrait.

More than steel pipe furniture

All of this fits in with the thrust of the exhibition “ways out of the Bauhaus, Gerhard Marcks and his circle of friends”, in cooperation with the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen and the DFG project “Moving networks. Bauhaus members and their relationship networks in the 1930s and 1940s,” the Brandenburg Technical University of Cottbus-Senftenberg and the University of Erfurt. “We want to show that the Bauhaus was diverse,” says curator Blümm, “and that the movement does not reduce to a steel tube furniture and new Typography.”

The exhibition “ways out of the Bauhaus. Gerhard Marcks and his circle of friends,” is first to 5. To see February in the New Museum Weimar and 26. November 2017 to 4. March 2018 in the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen.
