Champions League, from 2018 onwards, only on Pay TV

The UEFA sold the rights for the Champions League for three seasons starting in 2018 to the pay-TV broadcaster Sky and the Internet portal DAZN. The ZDF is empty.

The Champions League will be seen by 2018 only in the Pay-TV. The broadcaster Sky has secured the media rights to the most important club competition in European football. The UEFA purchased package is valid according to the company, for all distribution channels up to the year 2021. Sky works together with the Streaming provider DAZN, the Sub-licences for the Internet. The purchase price the company made no details.

ZDF Director Bellut: “Bad news for viewers.”

The Second German television in the bidding process empty. The public broadcaster is allowed to transmit only in the coming season, 18 games in the free-to-air television. The ZDF had made, according to of head of sports, Thomas Fuhrmann, “a very good offer”: “We went to the pain threshold.” In the end it was not enough. “For football fans, the shift in the Pay-TV bad news,” said ZDF Director Thomas Bellut. “European top football is an exclusive offer for significantly less viewers than in the past.” The state broadcasting Treaty in Germany requires that “finals of the European club Championships in football in the case of German participation” in the Free-TV to see. This, however, is not an obstacle, because the news channel Sky Sport News HD is for the end of 2016, free-to-air.

As one of the winners should feel DAZN. The Internet service had launched its offer only in August 2016 and has, among other things, the transfer of the rights to the English Premier League and the Spanish Primera Division. From the Bundesliga to the service is allowed to show from the upcoming season, the highlights of the games.
