Microsoft is working on a version of Windows Server that can run on ARM chips. The U.s. software giant has, according to rumors already about a first test version, but the plans have not yet been made public.

According to Bloomberg, several sources said that the plans would know, doubt Microsoft or the software is going to sell. The American company now offers a single Windows Server for x86-servers. X86-cpus are generally more powerful than ARM chips, but less energy efficient.

If Microsoft a Windows Server-version for the ARM architecture releases, that could be a big incentive for manufacturers to bring the technology to more devices. Currently, mostly mobile devices like smartphones and tablets on ARM chips, while the servermarkt largely in the hands of Intel with its x86 architecture.

Microsoft wanted the rumor is opposite Bloomberg won’t confirm. Incidentally, there are some manufacturers who have ears would have to servers with ARM chips. HP said in 2011, for example, even the cpu’s. Competitor Dell also worked on servers with the chips.
