The government is working with a number of ict companies on a decentralized Dropbox alternative, that is safer than existing cloudopslagdiensten. The code is open source, so everyone is there own server and can set up.

The idea for the cloudopslagdienst, LocalBox, came from the Second Room. The plan for the service had been longer, but the Snowden-revelations have extra to accelerate, says beveiligingsjournalist Brenno de Winter, who is involved in the project and more involved about the cryptography. Also include the Tax administration, the State Council and the General Court of auditors participate in the project.

LocalBox, that this autumn the open-source must be available, has a lot of attention to security. “Documents are stored encrypted, and the keys are in the hands of the user,” said Winter. “And if you send documents, they are also end-to-end encrypted.” In addition, only the sender and the recipient access to the data, and not the cloud-based itself.

Users can themselves define the LocalBox-server set up, but hosting providers would also be configured LocalBox accounts can offer. Also, organizations can have a shared environment offering for their users. The Winter revealed the service during the eth0-hackersconferentie, where the Leeuwarder Courant first reported.

The service will initially be available as a sync app for Windows, similar to that of Dropbox and Google Drive, and with apps for Android and iOS which files can be accessed. A browser version is not yet, because the implementation of client-side cryptography in that case a lot of problems.
