Samsung has Tuesday its first consumer ssds with 3d v-nand memory on the market. The consumentendrives with stacked flash memory come in variants of 128GB to 1TB on the market and should focus on performance to compete.

The 850 Pro series of ssds consists of diameter of 2.5″drives as a distinguishing feature 3d v-nand flash memory. This type of chips stacks Samsung multiple layers of memory cells on each other, leading to more efficient designs leads. This makes, among other things, that Samsung memory on a 3xnm process can fabricate, which is less expensive and less technological obstacles yields than the 21nm or 19nm-production of other flashchips. Advantage here would be, according to Samsung that the life of the chips is longer.

By the design of the cells have the 850 Pro drives generally have better performance than that of previous ssd’s on the basis of conventional flash memory, despite the use of a larger process, claims Samsung, while the current consumption is reduced. The current 3d v-nand memory has a capacity of 128Gbit, but Samsung says the capacity for the same process, quite a bit to carry to up to 1Tbit per chip.

In addition, for the first generation of the 3d memory, the last years for enterprise drives in production went, still 24 layers of stacked and Samsung for the consumer models now all 32 layers to be stacked. The 850 Pro series is starting this month available, with prices that are in line would lie with that of the 840 Evo series. The first test appears to be the 850 Pro ssds are faster than most ssd’s, but not faster than the 840 Evo. The long life and the extra warranty will make the drives suitable for, for example, workstations.
