A consortium of auto and parts manufacturers has Monday the first public version of Automotive Grade Linux, a variant of the linux distribution Tizen for in the car. With this platform, the companies want an ‘open environment’ for in the car to introduce.

The consortium operates under the auspices of The Linux Foundation, and includes the car manufacturers Jaguar, Nissan, Toyota, and Hyundai, while parts manufacturers Samsung, LG, Nvidia and Texas Instruments joined the project. The companies started two years ago with the project, on the basis of the Linux software for the automotive industry to develop. Central to this were control of infotainment systems and applications for the on-board computers of modern cars.

The latest version of Automotive Grade Linux is a further development of Tizen, a Linux-based open-source operating system that Samsung uses in televisions and smartphones. AGL provides with the already existing apps, which are written in html5 and JavaScript, dashboard, Google Maps, a news reader, cruise control and synchronization with other devices. Also, there is support for the operation of the heating, ventilation and cooling.

AGL is according to the initiators especially useful, because it is a universal basis would offer. “AGL provides the industry in the base the benefits on the field of the stability and strength of a regular linux distribution, while companies faster unique applications and functionality on the market”, explains Rudolf Strief of The Linux Foundation. “By taking part in BGR, the industry is not to do with fragmentation, allowing manufacturers time loss amount and r&d resources to waste.”

Automotive Grade Linux is competing with Android Auto, a special version of Android for cars that are recently launched by Google has been announced. However, the difference is that Android Auto is running on the smartphone of the user, and connection with the car, while AGL does not have. Apple offers with Apple CarPlay also such a system as Android Auto. Car manufacturer Audi made last week known to both systems in the long term to support.
