‘AMD replaces Tahiti Pro gpu, R9 280 in August by economical Tonga’

AMD would plan to use the Tahiti Pro gpu, the Radeon R9 280 to replace it by a fuel-efficient new gpu, codenamed Tonga. The new version of the map is about 2GB of gddr5 instead of 3GB of gddr5 memory.

About the Tonga gpu have been going longer rumors, but sources have VR-Zone told that the video chip in August, to appear. This would not be a new chip be used, but the Tahiti Pro gpu, the Radeon R9 280 to replace it. The only detail that the site reports, is that the gpu with 2GB of gddr5 combined, that the Tahiti Pro 3GB.

Videocardz adds other details about specifications. Tonga would have 32 compute units, and thus 2048 cpu cores and the chip would be using a 256bit wide bus to memory to communicate. The Tahiti Pro has a geheugeninterface of 384bits. Nevertheless, would Tonga be faster and more fuel-efficient than the Tahiti Pro, but not more powerful than the Tahiti XT. Both gpu’s are on 28nm produced, but Tonga could possibly be the first gpu at Global Foundries manufactured.
