Researchers have a ‘joystick’control for smartwatch developed. The prototype does not work with a touch screen, but with, for example, the scrolling of the whole watch to the left, right, top or bottom. There are no plans yet for a commercial product.

The smartwatch may be the control register via a small joystick-module, write the researchers of the Carnegie-Mellon university in the Us city of Pittsburgh in their paper. This N35P112 registers the input as if the whole smartwatch as a joystick that the user moves back and forth. Also, he can press a button to register.

Thanks to this joystick, the user can zoom, an alarm clock set by turning the interface of an app control by the up, down, left or right to move. The input requires that the user of the smartwatch on both sides are holding. By this operation, it is possible to shooters to play on a watch: the researchers used Doom to demonstrate.

This ‘minijoystick’ is linked to a Maple Mini, with a Cortex M3 processor at 72MHz. The smartwatch has a screen, a 1.5″lcd screen with a resolution of 280×220 pixels. Thanks to better integration of parts of the whole model in the size of a normal smartphone, claim the researchers. There are still no plans for a concrete product with this control. Current smartwatch work almost exclusively via a touchscreen or voice commands.
