The number of bittorrent downloaders that uses the distributed hash table, where data about downloads, independent trackers is exchanged, according to German researchers has almost doubled.

By making use of dht technology, which in a large number of bittorrent clients have been implemented, mainly publicly available bittorrent downloads and less dependent on servers that tracker function. So p2p downloads via the bittorrent protocol more stable. According to German researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is the number of peers in the dht-network, however, suddenly almost doubled; in place of approximately 6 million dht-users, there were more than 10 million identified.

Initially it was thought that the dht protocol may be infected would be hit with fake references. After further investigation, however, showed that a recent change in the dht protocol, the greatly increased number of users may explain. The so-called flapping feature is according to a uTorrent developer the cause of the greatly increased number of dht users.

It is unclear yet whether this major problems will result for the bittorrent users; Torrent freak reports that the questions about the new dht implementation has to be open to the developers of the p2p protocol.
