The team at VLC has a first b lwa ta of the VLC app for Windows 8 released. A large part of the basic functionality is present, but some functionalities are missing, such as hardware acceleration and the playback of streams.

The app works on both Windows 8 as Windows 8.1, writes a developer of VLC on his own blog. According to the developer, Jean-Baptise Kempf, was by far the most difficult VLC-port until now, but he does not go into that. Also emphasized Kempf that it is a beta and not all functionality works well. Also does the app still not work on Windows RT, the version of Windows 8 for ARM-cpu’s. That’s going to happen eventually, together with a Windows Phone version, promises Kempf.

The app allows all the formats to play the desktop version of VLC also can handle, but the application is still slow, warns the developer. There is still no hardware acceleration and subtitle support is still mediocre; the loading of external subtitle files for example, is not possible yet. Moreover, the output of sound is not, there is still no support for playlists and playback streams, and the application is still not very stable.
