The Dutch developer Chainfire has an app developed that wi-fi-tracking less lucrative would have to make. The Pry-Fi app generates on a smartphone continuous random mac address while it searches for a wi-fi hotspot.

The Pry-Fi-app van Chainfire is intended for Android smartphones. Normally, the tracking of a wi-fi signal by, for example, a shop just to avoid the turn off of the wi – fi or bluetooth option on a mobile phone. Pry-Fi allows a smartphone to search for possible compatible hotspots, but by keeping the mac address would modify the collected information in a central database according to the developer “dirty” can be. In addition, Pry-Fi make sure that the smartphone is no longer the ssid’s on the phone saved wi-fi networks route.

Pry-Fi will also be the mac address change if a connection is made with a wi-fi network. This can be a disadvantage if, for example, the firewall of a router is partly set on the basis of a mac address, but the developer wants to reduce the usefulness of the collection of mac addresses is further reduced.

The Pry-Fi app is not yet functional on all Android smartphones; the developer calls it is currently a proof-of-concept. In addition, there is root access to the Android firmware. It is unclear yet whether the functionality in respect of the privacy will be incorporated in, for example, future custom firmwares.
