CWI goes again .en-register domain names

The Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica is the registrar for .nl domain names. CWI contributed to the management about it .en domain eighteen years ago to the SIDN, and is now going again .en-register domain names for their own projects and spin-off companies.

The SIDN has CWI on February 18, as .en-registrar account. The CWI is one of the few new accessions as a registrar; that number has been declining for several years. The Centre will also not for a large number of third parties .en-register domain names, but will it be mainly for private use and for companies with close ties to the organization. “For example, the domain names of CWI’s spin-offs better be converted if commercially independent,” says Niels Nes, head of IT & Facilities at the CWI about the benefits.

The accession is mainly due to the history interesting. “The circle between SIDN and the CWI, the organization to which the cradle is for .en domain, after 18 years around”, for example, the both organizations. On april 25, 1986 was the .en-domain is assigned to the CWI in Amsterdam. Piet Beertema, system administrator at the CWI, performed all .en-registrations until 1996, with the hand. At the end of that year, the baton taken over by the Foundation for Internet Domain registration in the Netherlands, founded by the CWI, Surfnet and NLnet.
