GfK: gameverkoop on physical media shows slight increase

Unlike re-falling film – and muziekverkopen on physical media, the sale of games in the third quarter, a slight increase show, reports research company GfK. Further stagnates the circulation of paid-for music downloads.

According to GfK, the effects of the online distribution in the entertainment business on the sale of physical carriers such as dvds and cds, clearly. The turnover from music dvds fell by 36 percent, while the sales of music albums, 22 percent lower than the third quarter in 2011. Also the number of sold movies ran back. Only the sales of games on physical media left in the third quarter, a slight increase of 7 percent compared to the same quarter in 2011. GfK recognises that within the last quarter, some big releases, including FIFA 2013 and Guild Wars 2, took place while that last year was not the case.

GfK reports also that the sales of paid music downloads, for example, via iTunes, is stagnating. Further details the company wants to not give. The decrease is presumably due to the rise of streaming muziekaanbieders, such as Spotify.

In addition, the market researcher that the popularity of smartphones increases further. In the third quarter of 2012 would be two-thirds of all handsets sold was a smartphone. Also, the trend of increased sales of unlock and prepaid continue, says GfK. In the third quarter was 29 percent of all handsets sold a prepaid model while 26 percent unlock.

Partly due to the vat increase on 1 October from 19 percent to 21 percent went, causing the collapse of turnover in the consumer electronics 18.4 percent to 411 million euros.
