HTC will give users the ability to set the phone via the browser and then all the settings to the phone to send. This appears from the leaked Android 4.1 firmware for the One X, which is in the hands of Tweakers.net.

The possibility comes to the fore in the set-up of the One X-firmware, which contains a reference to a site with the address “start.htc.com/onex’. That url refers to a domain with a url aurora.sense-cs.com’. Thereupon, now appears a message that it is a restricted demo’, after which a login is required. Therefore, it is not yet clear which things exactly through the browser can be set. The setup via the browser is not required.

Tweakers.net got the firmware through tweaker Xmoo and he is still so secret that he has a watermark, something HTC usually does with early versions of its software. The codes refer not to sources, but only to the data of the sample unit. The firmware includes many improvements. He is based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and is the digital assistant Google Now. Also is the build number Sense increased from 4.1 to 4.5 and has the Linux kernel version 3.1, for the first time at HTC. Until now published firmware had Linux kernel 2.6.x.

There are the necessary changes will be visible in the firmware. So are the applications Chrome, Google Shopper, and Best Deals standard. Also makes HTC more work of promoting the Media Link HD, a mediastreamer for the tv. The Media Link HD is visible in an application and in the settings menu.

In the settings menu has Beats Audio, and given their own place, while also ‘App associations’. Therein, the user can set which app opens when, for example, a link or video. In addition, the camera interface is slightly modified. There is a button in the screen to quickly switch from the rear camera to the front camera and vice versa.

About performance improvements in this stage yet, nothing will be said. Does seem to be the elements of Google’s Project Butter to make the interface always on 60fps to let walk have yet to be implemented; when changing tasks and quickly with the phone working there were stotteringen to see. Also the results of the benchmarks don’t say much, but there were improvements in the speed with which to databases related matters are carried out and in the rendering of OpenGL ES 1.1 graphics. Also the browser seems faster, although this can be attributed to improvements of Android 4.1.

The firmware is clearly not finished yet, as evidenced by the hands-on; he is not always stable and apps crash occasionally, for unclear reasons. Also the software is not yet fluent, things that are generally to be fixed before an update to users is rolled out.

It is still unclear when the official Android 4.1 firmware for the One X comes out. Some rumors point to October, while also a date at the end of december is called. HTC released the One X, this spring, with Android 4.0.3, while a month ago an update to 4.0.4 has been rolled out. HTC promised earlier, the One X update to Android 4.1.

Update 17:57: Xmoo points out that the glitches in the interface, probably caused by the watermark, that an extra layer over the interface is. According to him the interface without watermark is much smoother and it seems as if the elements of Project Butter so it does have an effect.
