A group of researchers from several Australian and Japanese universities jointly a new type of electron microscope developed. With the device the electric fields of atoms to be viewed.

The new electron microscope by scientists from the Australian Monash university, the Japanese university of Tokyo and the Science and Technology Agency was developed, is a variation of a scanning transmission electron microscope’, or voice. A beam of electrons on atoms is fired, and the extent to which the bundles are deflected by the electric field of atoms, allows the researchers to those fields to visualize.

Visualizing the electric fields would provide new insights into their structure. According to one of the researchers of the School of Physics of the Australian Monash university researchers details they never saw before. The better understanding of electric fields on a very small scale could lead to new, advanced materials, inter alia for data storage. Also the production of solar cells and accutechniek could benefit from more knowledge of electric fields on the atomic scale.
