AMD, ARM, Imagination, MediaTek and Texas Instruments have the Heterogeneous System Architecture foundation was established. The companies want the developers to make it easier to for different processors to develop.

The purpose of the Heterogeneous System Architecture to open standards for heterogeneous computing to develop. The idea of heterogeneous computing is that different types of hardware components can be used for tasks. AMD advertises already a long time with the gpgpu capabilities of its apus: chips which are a combination of cpu and gpu. In January renamed AMD its Fusion System Architecture to Heterogeneous System Architecture.

The new partnership should lead to a common hardware specification and broad ecosystem, so that developers easier applications the computing power of different types of processors appeal to you.

The use of the video chip, for example, parallel tasks, the HSA-linked to compete with the Cuda initiative from Nvidia and OpenCL from the Khronos Group. The HSA foundation, however, focuses on more than just the gpu, also the cpu and other accelerators in system-on-a-chips. It is also apparent from the mix of supporting parties that the group is not only on traditional computers, but also on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. In addition, there appear more and more servers with ARM chips, because of the energy-saving capabilities.
