Nintendo has, for the first time ever a jaarverlies to report. Strong declines in sales of the Wii and the Nintendo 3DS are the cause. According to Nintendo, the results are better with the Wii U, and the expansion of the Nintendo Network.

The jaarverlies is due to a deteriorating sales of all Nintendo consoles. The company sold during this financial year, from march 2011 to march 2012, 36 per cent fewer consoles. On top of suffering the company under a strong yen, which makes the value of exported goods is under pressure.

So were the Wii in the year, but ten million units sold instead of the hoped-for thirteen million and decreased the demand for the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo has no detailed and updated sales figures of the 3DS released. However, earlier this year announced that a total of fifteen million units of the 3DS were sold since its release in march last year.

It rose the sales of the 3DS only after heavy price cuts, the profit margin Nintendo is so strong would have printed that the company sold handheld a net loss would suffer. According to some sources, will see the company market can also be absorbed by the increasing popularity of gaming on smartphones, but the president of Nintendo denies that assertion.

Nintendo sees next year rosy. “With the advent of the Wii U later this year, the better. We have learned from the mistakes that we have committed with the launch of the 3DS and with the Wii U to do well.” The company will also focus more on the online service Nintendo Network, the next console.
