Netgear claims to be the first manufacturer with a wi-fi router on the basis of the not yet ratified 802.11 ac protocol on the market. The dual band router would have a theoretical throughput of up to 1.3 Gbps at 5GHz.

The R6300 Netgear makes use of the 5G Wi-fi IEEE 802.11 ac chipset from Broadcom. The maximum speed on the ‘traditional’ 2.4-GHz-band amounts to a theoretical 450Mbps, but at 5GHz, the router may speeds of 1.3 Gbps.

The upcoming 802.11 ac standard makes higher speeds possible by, among other things, the bandwidth of the channels to increase from 40MHz in 802.11 n to 80 mhz. Optional is even 160MHz. In addition, the number of mimo data streams is increased from four to eight. Finally, the qam considerably increased.

The expectation is that the final version of the 802.11 ac protocol at the end of 2012 is ready and that the IEEE 802.11 Working Group in 2013 ratifies. Probably, also, it is only at that time, devices are available that of the high speeds of the 802.11 ac routers can use. Several manufacturers, including Buffalo, Edimax, and now have routers with support for the network technology announced. Netgear, however, would be the first to have a device actually releases; the R6300 comes out in July 2012 available in the Benelux countries, for a suggested retail price of 199 euros.
