Due to a bug in the software of dns management organization, Icann were data from other users to see. Icann has the whole registration system is offline and the deadline for gtld applications is shifted.

The organization had previously know that there are some ‘irregularities’ were noted in the BAG that the applications for new gtlds were treated. That irregularities appeared according to the organization, a vulnerability in the registration system; it was possible to use data from other users to see. That is even worse, as it is often persons, companies or organisations who prefer to remain anonymous. According to Icann, it was therefore, the best solution to the system is preventive for four days offline, until april 17. The deadline for the applications was also moved, from 12 to 20 april.

It is not clear where the error exactly was, or whether there are real data are leaked and how much data that would be of concern. The Icann itself claims that there was no attack and that no data has been lost from persons or organisations that have submitted an application, reports Domain Incite. According to some sources, the fault may be to do with not closing an html tag.

It is not the first time that the registration of the new domains goes wrong. The going offline of the registration system on the day of the deadline is a big dent in the confidence of the Icann. What’s going to happen now with the announcement of the newly requested domains, scheduled for 30 april, is not clear.
