The problem with TomTom devices that have no or a poor gps signal can be received, is caused by a ‘leap year bug’. A fix is not there yet, although a reset of the device, the problem to temporarily resolve.

TomTom users

have since Saturday the 31st of march no or poor gps reception. TomTom says the ‘root cause’ for the problems by now to have found. There’s a bug in the way the software is a leap year deal.

“We are working hard on a solution,” says a TomTom spokesman Wouter Glaser. “More I can not currently say.” On his site, which gives TomTom later on Tuesday with more details to come, but if there is already a software update is available, it is not yet known. According to TomTom customers have indicated that a reset of the device, the problem to temporarily resolve.

Exactly what the problem is, is unclear. Gps navigation leans on time; on the basis of the delay of the signal from different navigation satellites, the position of a user is determined. When the tijdafhandeling of a device is disturbed, it is therefore obvious that the device is in the war can get lost. The year 2012 is a leap year; march is the first month following the schrikkelmaand February and may was therefore on the 31st of march, something wrong.
