Detainees in the prison of Hasselt gain access to a controlled network. They may thus to some web sites browsing for movies to rent, to look for a job, an education or their file.

The system that was built from the prison of Hasselt gives prisoners access to a select number of services on the internet. Within the limits of a whitelist may, for example, on the website of the Flemish Service for Employment and Vocational training to employment to be sought or can a course be followed.

Detainees also will have access to a online shop where they, for example, cigarettes can buy or a movie you can rent. A store was previously commonplace in the Belgian prisons, but where previously everything was done by paper documents had to be requested, that process is now digitized.

The prison system also sets up the case file and judgment, or a request for appeal available. The online viewing of the file means according to Laurent Sempot, spokesman for the Belgian prisons, a great cost savings. It does not physically transport more place to find the prisoners, nor of the files.

To access the virtual desktop that the system provides, the prisoner must have a personal usb key to connect to, then login with name and password. Warders of the prison to get an iPad which they, with the help of a web app, you can see where the inmate go surfing.

The total cost is still little known, but it is known that the ‘few millions’. In the future, the project can national be extended.
