Sony shows at CES, a 55″prototype of a new type of screen. The “Crystal LED Display”, as Sony are type calls, a full hd display with rgb-pixels on the basis of tiny leds. It would be able to compete with oled tv’s.

As with oled, and plasma technology provide the (sub)pixels in the new Crystal LED display technology own light, unlike lcd technology, the backlight for the light and the lcd, the light transmittance of the subpixels controls. As a result, the viewing angles of the Crystal LED display is very high.

Sony gives for his Crystal LED screen with a maximum viewing angle of approximately 180 degrees. The contrast and the black level of the new technology would be significantly better than that of lcd and plasma, but similar to oled. An advantage of the use of very small leds is that they have little wear, but a disadvantage would be the price of the approximately six million tiny leds in the screen are processed.

The maximum brightness of the new screen would 400cd/m2, while the color space more than 100 percent of the clamping of ntsc would include. The 55″-schermmodule of the tv consumes around 70W, but it is not known how much the entire tv is consumed.

Sony is betting on different horses, and says the Crystal Led display technology, in parallel with the oled tv technology to want to develop. Sony sees the new display technology, opportunities in the market for professional displays, but excludes use for consumer electronics. Incidentally, some very large displays for advertising purposes now made up of individual leds, because of their bright glow, so the complaints there even with a lot of sunlight still ‘out of control’.

Perhaps recalling Howard Stringer, ceo of Sony, during an interview in november 2011 by The Wall Street Journal on the Crystal LED technology, when he talked about the development of a new type of tv’.
