Facebook builds first European data center in the high north

Facebook begins with the construction of its first European data center. The data center in the high north of Sweden, because the servers there don’t have to be refrigerated. The data center occupies fourteen football fields.

The datacenter in a total of 8.4 acres consists of three buildings and is in the Swedish Luleå. It is the first Facebook data centre outside the United States, writes news agency AFP. Facebook would not say how much the construction of the data center cost, but the Swedish government contributes 11.4 million euros. In three years time should the data center for up to 300 new jobs.

The first building of the data center should be operational within a year; the data center is functioning in 2014 at full strength. For the location would be chosen because there is less money on cooling need to be addressed. Luleå is situated close to the arctic circle; in the past year was the average between -3 and 6 degrees celsius, with peaks of -31 degrees Celcius last winter and 30 degrees in June.

The data center would be predominantly run on hydro-electric power; provided by the river Lule. According to the mayor of Luleå should be city is a primary location for data centres to be; he calls the region “The Node Pole”.
