May, Merkel and the Brexit – the right?

Hardworking, ambitious, pastor’s daughters. There are many Parallels between Angela Merkel and new British Prime Minister. Nevertheless, it is completely open how the two behave at the Brexit negotiations.

The “Berliner Zeitung” go with the flow: Like most Newspapers, has decided to make the sex Theresa Mays of their highlighted feature. In a Cartoon that appears in the Wednesday edition of the newspaper, the new strong woman at the head of the United Kingdom Angela Merkel in a Cup of tea and sit together. The two of them are confidential, their heads together. It feels reminiscent of two Housewives exchange gossip from the neighborhood: “Let the men just do their thing…”, Merkel say, prompting its British counterpart, ending the sentence with “…and at the end you get your Job”.

It is very easy to see Parallels between the two Government. Both, Merkel, and May have come in conservative parties, in a totally male dominated environment. Angela Merkel, the salmon was the end of the third when a power struggle between Ex-Chancellor Helmut Kohl and his designated successor Wolfgang Schaeuble. As the fog of the donations scandal that had shaken the Conservatives in 1999, scanned, she was elected in April 2000 the CDU party Chairman. May was able to prevail in the early summer of 2016 in a male-dominated Hahn battle for the succession to David Cameron’s.

Similar to before them Margaret Thatcher, the first woman to Kingdom at the top of the United Kingdom, May, and Merkel as an outsider to the top fight. Ambition and an absolute will to Power, the core competencies are needed to enforce the two in a sexist, tradition-fixated industry. The fact that both grew up as daughters of a Protestant pastor, has highlighted their similarities.

Technicians of the Power

In addition to the obvious biographical Similarities, there are a whole set of deeper Parallel. “The two of them pursue a very pragmatic policy style”, says Josef Janning of the “European Council on Foreign Relations” in Berlin. Large, far-reaching reforms you need from the two not to be expected, more of a solution-oriented approach in the area of the politically feasible.

Add to that, that May as Minister of the interior as a Hardliner, has profiled, including their harsh attitudes towards migrants and the Expansion of state Surveillance.

“She is a typical Minister of the interior,” said Janning. “And a typical Minister of the interior, at least from a German point of view, is a ‘law and order’Person. In this respect, it can go to a Minister of the interior to enforce the law. The German interior Minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, and his successor, Thomas de Mazière, the reputation exactly the kind of politician types.”

It can be assumed that the personnel May has caused in the German Cabinet for some relief. Especially the Alternative, the Populist Boris Johnson, the inexperienced Andrea Leadsome, or according to Schreier, the Minister of justice, Michael Gove, had difficulty with the German parliamentarians head. The latter had seriously spoken of, that the British “had a snout full of political experts”. All three candidates were hailed from the right edge of the Labour party frenetically. Boris Johnson does now, however, in the Cabinet, the prominent role of foreign Minister.

“Maybe this will now stop, finally, a bit more rationality into the heated debate over the past few months,” said Herbert Reul, the head of the CDU/CSU group in the European Parliament hoped, at least, compared to the “mirror”.

Janning looks quite similar. “The reactions in Germany are also positive, because this is a protracted leadership dispute within the Conservative party, was prevented. This means that negotiations no standstill in the Brexit -. After the elections at the end of June, the stand is to be feared.”

More of a mediator than a leader

It remains uncertain whether May will hurry the negotiations quickly. For one, she was a member of the “Remain”-camp. On the other, fought not really passionate for the whereabouts of the United Kingdom in the EU. This Nonchalance could come during the difficult negotiations in Brussels now.

New counterpart Enda Kenny and Angela Merkel will have to negotiate with Theresa May, the Brexit

“In the end, you must convince both camps,” said Janning. Neither the Remain or Leave the warehouse, would you consider so far as one of them: “your pragmatism enables it, without the pressure to justify, to argue in both political directions. Actually, it is more of a CEO than a traditional political leader.” In contrast to the latter, a CEO must always obtain the consent of the Executive Board.

Angela Merkel has responded in turn, as is their way, stresses the cooling on appeal, Mays as Prime Minister. There were neither congratulations nor warm Greetings for the new strong woman on the island: “the main task of The new Prime Minister will be to create clarity about what to take for a type of relationship the United Kingdom and the European Union in the future,” said Merkel on the sidelines of a meeting with the Irish Prime Minister, Enda Kenny.

In fact, it is not for this, there are a few indications that common biographical roots need not necessarily lead to that it will expire between May and Angela Merkel as harmonious as the Cartoon in the Berliner Zeitung suggests. Both are under a lot of pressure. You need to prevent that the Brexit is no Domino-triggering effect in Europe.

“It depends on how May goes on,” said Janning. “If she remains pragmatic and focused on what can get Britain in return for free access to the market, then the two will get along well with each other. If you tried but come hell or high water, at the expense of the EU, the Best for Britain out, then it becomes very, very difficult with Angela Merkel.”
