Every ninth child lives in the conflict region

The UN children’s Fund, UNICEF, is sounding the Alarm: Around 250 million girls and boys live in conflict-affected regions. Particularly frightening is that violence is increasingly directed against children.

Worldwide, a Generation of war and crisis, children grow up. The children’s Fund, the United Nations, UNICEF, reported in Berlin in its Report this year, the scale of violence against children exceeds everything that have registered with the Agency since its inception 70 years ago.

According to UNICEF, every ninth child grows up today in a Region in which violence and armed conflict over a long period of his Childhood facilities are on the agenda. In 2015, 16 million children were born in regions of conflict. The total is estimated to grow to 250 million children in countries and regions where armed conflicts take place. 75 million children between three and 18 years of age can not go to Kindergarten and not, or only irregular in the school.

No moral boundaries

Alone in the Middle East are at risk, according to an estimate by UNICEF, 20 percent of all children, lightweight and three to four percent of serious mental health problems develop, if you will not be helped. Notschulen and psycho-social assistance to be effective means to stabilize children in crisis-affected areas, the Unicef report. However, 2013 had been paid only two percent of the world’s emergency relief funds in such programs.

In many conflicts, kidnapping, rape, torture and murder of children are widespread methods to adults demoralize, according to the Report. “For us, a lot of reports that snipers deliberately targeting children and schools, kindergartens and playgrounds to be attacked,” said the managing Director of UNICEF Germany, Christian Schneider. There are no moral boundaries any more: That, for example, attacks on schools are internationally outlawed, and games for the war leading to all appearances, not a role. As registered by Unicef in the year 2014 in Afghanistan, 164 attacks on schools in Iraq, there were 67. In Nigeria, the terrorist militia Boko Haram have attacked since 2009, more than 1,200 schools and hundreds of teachers killed.

Complexity and duration of conflicts is increasing

In Syria, verified by UNICEF in the year 2015, more than 1500 of the most serious violations of children’s rights. In 60 percent of cases, children by bombs were killed in densely populated residential areas or been mutilated.

The complexity and duration of conflicts has increased, according to the UN Organisation. Usually, the key is to break the resistance of the inhabitants, to expel them, and to conquer the political Power. “The civilians in these areas often have a tremendous resistance. But if it is on the way to school and for the Growing up of the children, not even a minimum level of security is that for many families the main reason to flee,” said Schneider.
