Gabriel calls for less EU commissioners
After the Brexit vote for the British is discussed far and wide, what does this mean for the European Union. For SPD leader and economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel, The number of the EU is clear: commissioners must be reduced.
The SPD Chairman Sigmar Gabriel has called for a Europe-Congress of his party in Berlin again, to slim down the EU Commission. Currently it comprises 28 commissioners. A reduction of the peak body would mean that each EU-member country would receive a Commissioner’s post. In a newspaper interview, Gabriel had previously stressed with a view to the Brexit vote of the British people: “A Europe of the 27 commissioners will have to prove themselves, makes no sense.” Overall, the European Union should discard urgent “ballast” and on the Central tasks of focus.
In view of the future exit negotiations with the British government, the German Economics Minister called for a hard line. “Only haggling, then fail, and then brackets – this is the Motto that we must not give in,” he said in Berlin. “We would allow that to happen, that would be an invitation to all national egoists,” underlined Gabriel, with a view to other EU-States.
