Beloved Fantasy Creatures
Millions of copies sold, award-winning: The books of Michael ende have been translated into dozens of languages, and book-shelf in every German child. In “The Neverending story” is experienced by the Young Bastian’s adventure in the Land of Fantastica. Every child is familiar with “Jim button and Luke the engine driver” – the stories of two heroes, a locomotive, apparent giants and many other creatures.

Of witches, bandits and wizards
“There once was a little witch…” The protagonist in Otfried Preußler is 127 years old and would like to do good deeds. The popular German children’s book author (d. 2013) enchanted decades of children’s hearts. In “the robber Hotzenplotz” is about the coffee mill, kasperl’s grandmother. There is also a magician by the name of Petro silius zwackel man – in the name of you must come first.

A bear and a Tiger lived together happily ever after in a house, until you one day find a box, on the “Panama.” It smells like bananas. The two make their way to this country, the Land of their dreams. This is a Story? Not really. But kids love this logic. And that’s part of the charm of Janosch, the recently his 85. Celebrated a birthday.

In the case of Max Kruse and it’s crawling with strange creatures: Wutz, soul-Fant, English, penguin Ping and Professor Habakuk Tibatong a huge Egg to find… and from the slips: the Urmel. The doll game is a giant pleasure for children. The creatures have a language error – the Urmel, for example, is strong on Lisp.

Judith Kerr tells in her book “When Hitler pink rabbit stole” the escape of a Jewish girl, the nine-year-old Anna, and her family from the Nazis. The insightful book by the British writer, born in Berlin in 1923, in 1974 it won the German youth literature prize.

“Emil and the detectives”, “The Double Lottchen” and “The flying classroom”- no list of classic children’s book would be complete without Erich Kästner. His humorous, sharp-witted books have been translated into over 100 languages, and partially filmed. The saying “There is nothing Good except you do it” comes from Erich Kästner.

Seven Pranks
The cheeky boy story “Max and Moritz” is also a classic in children’s book-shelf. In 1865, he was released. The Creator of the naughty boys, the humorous Poet and Illustrator Wilhelm Busch, is a kind of forefather of today’s Comics. A number of lines from many of his works have become winged words – for example, “thanks be to God! Now it’s over / the end to your evil deeds!”

The “Struwwelpeter” by Heinrich Hoffmann, is even older, namely, in 1845. The book has been translated into many languages and dialects. There is even an anti-authoritarian counterpart, the “Anti-Struwwelpeter”. The teachings of all the ten stories are: When children are well-behaved, the consequences are sometimes cruel. Here, too, verses the winged word: “no, my soup eatin’ me.”

“Ink heart”, the award-winning first volume of Cornelia Funke’s ink world trilogy, appeared during the “Harry Potter”-mania – and was a Hit. The book the adventures of 12-year-old Meggie, which is blessed with the gift, when Reading fictional characters and objects from a story or Real in reading, was also made into a film successfully.

Because of the many word games, the “Sams”books are translate into other languages, but some parts were filmed. Favorite books vary from country to country. What is in a country a best-seller, the next a publisher. Some books can’t translate or give the peculiarities of a culture not so good. A beloved children’s book character in the United States is of German children, perhaps completely unknown.
