Comment: Waiting for Merkel’s turn

The upcoming EU summit, urgently needs a pan-European solution to the refugee crisis. However, the previous course of German Chancellor may not be the answer, says Christoph Hasselbach.

Two solutions to the refugee crisis be called again and again, to more radical claims to oppose: We must, above all, the root causes for migration combat. And: It could only be a European solution. Both is correct, but is used often as an excuse to make unpleasant decisions out of the way to go. Up in all of the countries from which people because of war, persecution, or lack of prospects flee, stability and prosperity to the Batcave, are likely decades pass. If it ever succeeds. And so far, all Attempts, with the rush of pan deal, failed.

Worse still, the battle lines within the EU are hardened than ever before. The Chancellor stands with its still comparatively liberal refugee policy alone. Most recently, even France’s Prime Minister Valls made it clear that Merkel is in the reception of refugees from this narrow ally, which is not much more I can expect.

A lack of trust At home and abroad

Three-quarters of German thought, most recently in a survey that the government of the refugees ‘ situation is not under control have. Only right at the European level – and here much earlier than in Germany – is Merkel’s policy of the open door with a shake of the head, Yes, with pangs of horror is acknowledged. And while she continued trying to the EU for a common solution according to your wishes to win, they must realize that their authority from the time of the sovereign debt crisis then.

DW correspondent Christoph Hasselbach

A fair distribution of refugees? Many in Europe think that Merkel will have the mass influx through their generous Aufnahmegeste really in motion. A fixed admission quota system? This applies in times more permeable external borders of the EU as a blank check for permanent immigration. The Plan, Turkey as refugees in their own country holds the EU pays for it and the Turkey defined Flüchtlingskontingente decreases? President Erdogan has indicated that he is changing the locks at any time open, and by the Europeans almost any price. And the willingness of most EU member States, voluntarily also only small quantity is more than minor.

The only thing in this crisis, all EU countries have in common is the desire to foreclosure. The organizing member States, increasingly, nationally, or in groups: Sweden has long been the end of his liberal Einreisepolitik announced; Austria an upper limit decided yet conscious of a knock on effect on the “Balkan route” is planned; the Visegrad countries even want the Non-EU country Macedonia “to help”, the border to Greece abzuriegeln, because Greece is the stream of refugees heading North will not stop. This would amount to an exclusion of Greece from the Schengen space, the numerous border controls already badly damaged. Schengen is acutely threatened, a victim of European disunity.

Solution before the summer is urgently sought

The EU will remain only a few weeks to get the Flüchtlingszahlen to reduce significantly. It is also the peak to be measured. Merkel is but your magnanimous asylum policy is not against the great majority of Europeans can continue. It holds the entry to Germany will remain open, while the other seal, is Germany the entire burden alone. This, however, is the majority of your own countrymen not let it go.

But it is also europapolitisch too much on the game. It gives the EU a strong interest in this unprecedented crisis together to solve. But Merkel’s course of the “We can do it” and “There is no upper limit” can not be scale. It is time for a new pragmatism.
