After quite a lot of Chinese phones had to have several different what is less well-known brands like Doogee and Elephone I thought it would be interesting to see once a device of a somewhat more famous chinese brand to test and review for my faithful review readers! And that was Meizu, this brand has been around a while and is generally known for good quality phones. However, they have generally a slightly higher price tag, more in the direction of the what is better Xiaomi’s, for example. But now the question is, is that what higher price tag it is well worth it, and can Meizu deliver?

And despite that it is a more ‘better’ brand, will be many of you Meizu will not know. Therefore, below, briefly what Meizu is different compared to many OEM manufacturers that China has. Meizu is running for a while in the consumer electronics industry, they made from 2003 MP3/MP4 players, and since 2008, mainly phones. This Meizu’s phone running its own Android fork “Flyme OS” what a pretty sturdy modified Android version of the app is that often ge lwa pdatet, similar to Xiaomi’s MIUI.

The phone that I discuss in this review is the Meizu MX4 Pro, the big brother of the Meizu MX4 in both size and specifications. This is a somewhat older flagship of Meizu (late 2014 launch) but is still a reasonably fast machine to today’s standards. The MX4 can also run Linux, but unfortunately this is the Pro version not.. nja you have something to talk about for the extra performance. But I had like a go. Maybe in the future if Meizu is still a Linux device releases?!

The Meizu MX4 Pro comes in a simple white box with MX4 “pro” and a few colored dots.. nothing wrong with that. You go a little further, you’ll also find the phone from, as you would expect. Then you get a kind of large booklet with the manual and a warranty information booklet out of the box. Still all fine, until you see that underneath, the USB cable and a “hole” in the packaging which states “Earphone not included” yes.. that I had not quite of a premium brand expected. Get that hole, then at least just leave and don’t go for this cheap solution.
Well, continue with the phone but. This is well packaged in a pouch and on the front and back sit screenprotectors with information printed where the power button etc, that is very useful and nicely done.

So in the box you will find:
• Meizu MX4 Pro
• Micro-USB cable
• Charger (2A)
• Manual
• Warranty card
• And so g. safety n headphones?!

Specifications:
• 5.5” inch 2K+ screen (2560×1536 pixels) of Sharp
• Samsung Exynos 5430 8-Core processor
• 20.7 MP Sony camera (rear) ƒ/2.3 inch lens
• 5.0 MP OmniVision OV5693 ƒ/2.2 camera (front)
• 3GB memory
• 16GB Rom (32/64GB options available)
• Android based Flyme 4.0 OS
• Size: 150.1 x 77 x 9 mm
• Weight: 158 g

The design of the M4X Pro is very definitely under the heading of “minimal”. It is, however, a different thing as you, on average, see in the Chinese market (the standard is fairly straightforward, with here and there a rounding, Meizu is different here from). The Meizu has a front touchscreen, with the bottom of a ‘home’ button, at the top of the speaker and an Led notification. The screen seamlessly in the metal frame just visible through the bevelled edge. And on the back it goes smoothly in a beautiful and fine feeling of form in the plastic cover. This ‘flat’ completion gives the unit a very chic thin look and feel. Also qualitatively in terms of build quality does feel the device is sturdy and well built. You can the device doesn’t really bend or flexen as you with cheaper phones still is looks. This has Meizu done before, and that is clearly seen in a top design/build quality.

Features:
At Meizu, they have not a phone dropped with a striking feature, but the phone packed with all features that you see in the average Chinese phone now can’t see it, but a year ago even not really. Here I will the most eye-catching discuss.

Operation:
Operation, operation? It’s just a touchscreen, as we al l lwa ng to know about all the other phones that we know, is a separate cup then? Yes, that is necessary. Because despite the fact that the MX4 Pro was indeed just about a touchscreen has is still one of the ‘standard’ controls significantly different than what we are used to from Android and that is the back/home/appdrawer combination. The Home button is like we usually also know the “home” button, but if you’re there than over swypt then he is suddenly the back button. That is a little getting used to but ultimately quite a complicated interface lwa tief something. The space next to the home button is in the up swypen the app drawer and nothing else, so just space around the unit to hold etc.

Screen:
This unit is equipped with a 5.5” QHD screen, something you won’t often encounter, even in the current range of Chinese devices. The resolution of 2560 x 1536 delivers an impressive DPI of 546, for me, sharp enough to make the pixels really don’t count. The screen is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 so it is almost impossible to scratch and can withstand a beating.
The color fastness can I not measure, but is similar if not better than the Xiaomi MI4c that I have here. Ok in terms of brightness does the device really not bad and you can make the screen easy to read in full sunlight. In short, an excellent screen where I daily still am impressed (especially if you went to a cheap chinese phones screen watching in the store)

Fingerprint sensor:
Under the name mTouch has the MX4 Pro fingerprint sensor built into the home button. So on an intuitive lwa tive place for daily use. The set-up is easy and fast, just a couple of times your finger rop the sensor and he is fully mapped and ready for use. I have both fingers of my left and right hand mapped because it is still best, however, si prevents you from just your phone with a different hand grabs. This is great, I have no idea what the max is but I already have 6 fingers mapped. In terms of recognition goes to the 90% of the time good, sometimes you need to be just to do it again but this happens really not often. A great alternative to another lockscreen method.

Near Field Communication:
This unit is a Near Field Communication or NFC chip fried. The coil is clearly seen in the cover if you open it and gives you quite a number of nice features in addition to the standard phone use. Because NFC is the best turnout yet. You can build a chip to buy and which programming so that when you go to sleep you’re just a weekend alarm and turn the phone on silent can convert with a ‘swype’ or that week-alarm because you on Saturday, however, there early want. But basically you can make just about anything to automate with NFC stickers that you can swypen.
But in addition to self ‘regulate’ may also be more involved in the outside world. So I have my account with ING linked to my phone and can I at all the points where you contact can also pay with my phone to pay. Here I only have the phone off sleep mode and swypen. And it works perfectly! It is even slightly safer than your debit card with a contactless chip because you can skimmen even if he is not active and my phone in my pocket doing nothing until I have him activate.

Audio:
Meizu has thought of everything it seems, because the audio fans will also get an extra with this phone and that is that there is an ES9018K2M DAC is used. Thus, according to Meizu ‘real’ Hi-Fi sound ge produces can be.

Wi-fi/4G/Bluetooth:
This phone is equipped with the most common standards of wireless communication, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct), but also just as Bluetooth 4.0 and a 4G chip.
The 4G sensor ensures that you have a good and stable range with a fast connection.
In terms of stability of the chips is fine, all connections are good stable whether you’re at home you use Wi-fi or on the train, the 4G chip needed, I still have no noticeable interference or reduced range noticed.

In addition, the MX4 Pro, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, QZSS support. So wherever you are in the world are in the works. Also nice if you are on vacation in China, or Russia for example.

Battery:
The battery 3350mAh capacity is sufficient to make the phone a a two days. The Exynos processor is to my feeling pretty economical in use because even in case of very intensive use, red I a full day’s use.

As I eeder said running the MX4 Pro Flyme OS, a custom version of Android (now on 5.1). On the unit that I received is the Flyme OS International version(4.5.7 (I) any default with Google play store. This international version is, in principle, also full English. In principle, because there is still a pop-up notification, or deep in a menu somewhere a chinese word. But actually it really is almost all English, anyway, everything for daily use. Furthermore, FlymeOS like stock Android app drawer and not, as many Chinese forks (and IPhone) all the apps on your home screen. In terms of workflow, everything is so quite similar to stock Android what the transition smoothly and fairly effortlessly.

In regard to appearance, Meizu really change much as to see not only the menus are a little different but also have all the icons, app drawers, notifications, and the notification screen is a different look and feel. Everything is a little more tight, but bright colors are set up and just has a different look and feel. What concerns me is not better or worse than stock Android.. just like anything else.
And what concerns the performance impact can I have little to say because I do not stock drawer long enough to tested on the device. But because they are the FlymeOS specially adapted per device says Meizu on average its about 20% more performance if you also look at battery usage.
Generally I found Flyme OS nice work, it is/was some getting used to but there are no annoying features, or ways in which I bother.

In daily use, you will notice that this phone is made for high-end use with its Exynos processor, and 3GB ram. Multitasking is no problem, you can change quickly between different apps that are still loaded in memory, and so forth.

Benchmark results:
• Geekbench 3: Single-core score 974, Multi-core 3629
• Quadrant: 16414
• Vellamo: Browser 4207, Metal 1702, Multicore 1738
• 3D mark Sling Shot ES 3.1: 534

And how’s the same with a year old device against the present devices? Still very good though. With an Antutu score of around 55,000 points you have really a powerful device. And the Kimovil score of “10” in terms of price/specs ratio is also an indication.

The MX4 Pro comes with 20.7 MP rear camera and 5MP front camera. Yes lwa cht a 20.7 MP camera on the back, and also with pretty serious specs. As ISO goes up to 1600, 4K 30fps video recording, 30 FPS burst photo mode, dual color flash and a focustijd of 0.3 s. These are serious specifications for a smartphone camera. So my expectations were high when making the photos.

A number of sample photos in this day gifts album (raw).

Photos in daylight are very good for a smartphone and are comparable with a simple compact camera. This is something I definitely am not used to of Chinese phones and really a highlight of the MX4 Pro. Photos with less daylight or in darkness, are a lot more difficult, the focus is not always good, and there’s quite a lot of noise on the photos. But the photos are still excellent, something you can’t always expect Chinese phones at night.
In addition to the still photos, the Meizu MX4 Pro is also “4K” video recording. The images look great, but to my feeling not much sharper/better than 1080P.
The included camera app from Meizu/FlymeOS offers you a lot of options and filtering capabilities. It is worth the effort to be there for a while to play if you really think that one picture perfect want to have. But also photos ‘the automatic’ easy.

The Meizu MX4 Pro has my expectations lived up to what I on the internet had read, in terms of quality performance what I Meizu could expect. What concerns me is Meizu next Xiaomi now recommended in terms of high performance phones with a solid build quality and OS. And if you specifically to this device looks is it perhaps an older model but in terms of features and benchmark scores, he does it still fine. Also in the daily use, this unit is really no bargain. The super beautiful screen and good camera keep me a laugh at the use of the device.

Advantages:
• Speaking QHD screen
• Excellent camera
• 4G internet
• Flyme OS
• NFC

Disadvantages:
• Price tag
• No expandable memory
• Non removable battery
