Scientists have developed a first version made of a ccd of just a few atoomlagen thick. The photosensitive device is made of the material copper-indiumselenide. Of the ccd is a prototype that is three pixels can capture.

Researchers from Rice University have the conscious ccd on the basis of the material copper-indiumselenide made. The research is co-financed by the NWO. The ccd of some atoomlagen thick can be used for 2d-cameras. As yet, however, there is only a prototype available that only limited possibilities: there can be three pixels with light information to be captured. When a more advanced version will be available is not yet clear.

According to the creators, the used buyer-indiumselenide electrons securing their release as soon as light the material is. The electrons can be long enough to be held to the resulting derivative information to be able to store. There are more materials that are thin manufactured can be and still have a good electrons can hold fast, but copper-indiumselenide is ten times more efficient than what has previously been observed, according to one of the researchers.

Thin the ccd to create new applications for cameras, as possible. The scientists see among other possibilities for the medical world. Because these ccd’s are flexible, can also new cameravormen be designed. A similar material, copper-indium-galliumselenide, is already used for photovoltaic cells, which are used for thin solar panels.

Update: There was accidentally in the article that was going to be a ccd of one atoomlaag thick. The text is adapted.
