Akamai: Dutch internet fastest in Europe

Research by Akamai reveals that the Netherlands within Europe is far ahead in regards to internet speed: on average, the Dutch can, with 7.5 Mbps surf. Only South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan offer a higher average speed.

Dutch people can with a speed of 7.5 Mbps connect to the internet, according to research from Akamai. Belgians surfing slightly slower, at 6.1 Mbps, but occupy thus still the ninth place in the rankings. 56 percent of the Dutch population has an internet connection of 5Mbps or faster; in Belgium, it’s 52 percent.

A year ago the Netherlands were still in seventh place, with an average speed of 6Mbps. Belgium came not in the top-ten for. Although Akamai not specifically stated, most likely to the download speed. According to Akamai in the Netherlands there are 8.2 million unique ip addresses, against 3.9 million in Belgium.

The highest average internet performance can be found in South Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan; South Koreans get their content with an average of 14.4 Mbps. The lowest average internet connections that Akamai has measured out for in Sudan, where people with an average of 600Kbps download. In Egypt and Venezuela, the average speed of connection with 800Kbps is not much better.

The average peak speed – the maximum speed for an average internet connection can handle – is located in the Netherlands at 22Mbps, that the country had a tenth place was occupied. Belgium, with 24,7 Mbps on the seventh place. In Hong Kong, South Korea, and Romania is the average top speed between the 32 and 40Mbps.

Akamai observed also in which countries hackers are most active. Most of the attacks come from Myanmar, the United States and Taiwan, with respectively 13, 10 and 9.1 percent. In the Netherlands and Belgium, the number is, respectively, 0.2 and 0.1 percent, set Akamai. Most of the attacks on the internet were aimed at tcp port 445, which is used for sharing files in Windows. A third of the ‘aanvalverkeer’ went to this port. Eleven percent was for port 80, which is used as the default for web servers.
