Currently, 130 trains of the NS free wi-fi on board. This is approximately a third of all intercity trains – and virtually every enkelvloerse intercity – equipped with wireless internet. The implementation runs behind schedule.

Who is currently traveling with a enkelvloerse intercity, also known as the front-runner, has always wi-fi on board. 130 of the 137 enkelvloerse intercity trains already have wi-fi; the other seven are currently being grown. That says NS-spokeswoman Nienke Kooistra against Tweakers.net. “As soon as all enkelvloerse trains over wi-fi, follow the double-decker buses,” says the spokeswoman. It is unclear how many double-decker buses are there now, but mid last year there were a total of 365 intercity trains.

Last year, the rollout of internet in the NS trains have a delay. After two months had only two intercity trains fitted with free wi-fi while that there are many more should have been. According to Kooistra runs the NS even now somewhat behind schedule. “Nothing is so changeable as a planning,” said the RAILWAY spokesperson. According to Kooistra had after the winter weather, for example, a lot of trains repairs to be carried out, and had that priority. Nonetheless, the objective, in 2013, all intercity’s wi-fi to be removed, says Kooistra.

Sprinters and stopping trains have no wi-fi on board. “The average time to travel in such trains is only 17 minutes,” says Kooistra, and wi-fi in the train would be more useful on longer journeys. Meanwhile, wi-fi in the train, however, mainly used for short sessions: the average battery life is ten minutes.

The last month was about 400,000 times use wi-fi in the train. “On average increases the number of sessions to 40,000 pieces per month,” says Kooistra. The connection in the train is provided by T-Mobile. The next two years is the internet in the train is still free; or that then remains so, it is not yet known.
