The German certification institute VDE confirms that the Cinema 3D series of LG is capable of full-hd display in the 3d mode. LG is expected with this validation of his claims in an ongoing dispute with competitors such as Samsung in check.

The dispute between LG and now Samsung is turning to the question of whether passive 3d on the basis of LG’s Film Patterned Retarder-technology is capable of 3d in full hd display. With the FPR-polarisatiefilmlaag on the Cinema 3D tvs from LG get each eye 540 lines thrown at you, thanks to polarization with the help of passive 3d glasses. LG claims that the brain’s stereoscopic information can combine to form a full hd image in 3d and VDE has this now been confirmed.

Samsung disputed this claim. In march of this year, said Kim Hyeon-Seok, head of Samsung’s displaydivisie, that LG with its claim of ‘consumers’ trying to mislead’ and that the company is ‘unconscionable’ to work. LG said earlier that Samsung’s active 3d technology is a generation behind the passive 3d technology.

It is not known what arguments the certification institute has to issue the particular certificate. Perhaps it has to do with the recently released firmware update for the Cinema 3D tvs. With this update, the stereoscopic image for each eye composed of 540 odd and even lines, sequentially displayed on the screen. Effectively, this delivers a 1080i image per eye, with the disadvantage of a lower refresh rate. Sabrina Eilers LG Benelux, says, however, that the certificate is separate from the firmware update.

Tests of Tweakers.net have shown that passive 3d technology, less light loss results than active 3d technology, with colors that more closely correspond to the 2d-image. A disadvantage, however, was that the per eye missing lines to show up. Also, the vertical viewing angle is more limited than with active 3d technology. In addition to LG also Philips and Toshiba some models use passive 3d.

The certificate would initially only be issued for the 47LW570s model, but given the technology used will be a certification of different image formats and the Tweakers.net tested LW650s series is not long in coming.
