The CentOS developers have more than a half year after the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 the new CentOS 6.0 was released. The developers recommend that administrators who are version 4 or 5 running to to version 6 ‘clean’ install.

CentOS is based on the code from Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The number of packages in version 6 that is different compared to that of RHEL is low and includes, among other Firefox, installer Anaconda and packagemanager Yum. It is also a number of packages from Red Hat Linux Enterprise omitted, which are specifically designed for paid support from the commercial company.

Version 6.0 of CentOS is currently available only as a 32bit and a 64bit dvd image for installation. The developers are working on a live-cd and a more compact version of the open-source operating system, which is on a cdr is to burn. Also a lighter ‘LightWeightServer-cd’ is in the planning.

System administrators who even CentOS 4 or 5 to run, it is recommended to not to update, but a complete reinstallation to perform. Security updates that Red Hat has already released for RHEL 6.1 will be offered to CentOS 6.0 users until plans are drawn up for CentOS 6.1. These are not yet.

CentOS is one of the most well-known distros which is a derivative form of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Alternatives include Scientific Linux and Oracle Linux. These two distributions have already a few months ago, the step was made to version 6 on the basis of the source code of Red Hat.
