City of Heroes will be free to play and get the subtitle to Freedom, reports the website of the mmog. Paying players are VIP members and get for their monthly payment, points which they have in-game items can buy.

The announcement does not mention when City of Heroes exactly transitioning to the freemium model. However, the opening of the game coincide with the release of the update Issue 21: Convergence. The update brings a new co-op zone, a new set of superpowers, and the Underground Incarnate Trial.

City of Heroes: Freedom will distinguish between three types of players: free, premium and VIP. All types of players can be the maximumlevel of 50 to achieve with their characters. Gamers who are following the freemium re-introduction of the mmog return, retain their progress and be premium players. Players with a free account may have their account upgrade to premium status through paragon points to purchase, which can be exchanged for in-game content.

The current paying members after the reintroduction, will be automatically converted into VIP members, granting them access to exclusive content like super powers, costumes, and missions. They will also receive from July 1 to 400 paragon points per monthly payment. Furthermore, VIP players to twelve characters on a server, as opposed to two for non-paying gamers. Finally, there will be a separate server where only VIP members can log in.

City of Heroes was released in 2004 and was developed by Cryptic Studios. In november 2007, the sale of the developer of the game to the publisher NCsoft that the game had developed by Paragon Studios.
