NASA has plans for a drone on Mars, going around fly. This would be the distances on reconnaissance trips tripled, and it should be easier to interesting locations to detect.

The drone, which autonomously around can fly and looks like a helicopter, is worked in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA. There is now a prototype available. Ultimately, it is intended that the so-called NASA Helicopter lasts as ‘add-on’ to future missions to Mars. Thus, it is not intended that the drone the usual Mars-rovers to replace.

According to NASA, the helicopter, the distances that are normal on a day to be taken with the ruimtekarretjes triple. In addition, it is from the air, easier to find interesting locations closer inspection earn. There may, for example, locations to be marked for soil samples to take. That task is then executed by the rover on the ground.

The developed prototype weighs a kilo and has a wingspan of slightly more than a meter. When the Mars-drone for the first time is used it is still impossible to say. That will depend on the planning of future Mars missions.
