The ESO, a European organization of astronomers under the guidance of the Dutchman Tim de Zeeuw, begins with the construction of the largest telescope ever. The telescope on a mountain in a desert in Chile. De Zeeuw is connected to the observatory of the University of Leiden.

The segmented main mirror of the telescope will have a diameter of approximately forty meters, making it the largest optical telescope in the world would be. The project is already in the planning since the adoption in 2012, but the Southern European Observatory, ESO should only begin after ninety percent of the necessary money together. That happened when Poland joined the ESO.

The European Extremely Large Telescope comes at a more than three kilometre-high mountain in the Atacama desert in Chile. The telescope to go into operation in 2024. With this telescope astronomers more details can see in the universe and more to gather knowledge about dark matter. The project will cost around a billion euros.
